paperback. Zustand: As New. 2008 University of Chicago Press (Chicago, Illinois), 8 1/2 x 10 inches tall trade paperback, still sealed in publisher's clear wrap, copiously illustrated with mostly full color photographs of artwork, xv, 317 pp. Tiny bit of bumping to upper tip of front cover where clear wrap is abraded. Otherwise, a near fine copy, unopened. Note that this is a heavy and oversized book, so additional postage will be required for international or priority orders. ~SP22~ [3.0P] George Inness (1825-94), long considered one of America's greatest landscape painters, has yet to receive his full due from scholars and critics. A complicated artist and thinker, Inness painted stunningly beautiful, evocative views of the American countryside. Less interested in representing the details of a particular place than in rendering the 'subjective mystery of nature,' Inness believed that capturing the spirit or essence of a natural scene could point to a reality beyond the physical or, as Inness put it, 'the reality of the unseen.' Throughout his career, Inness struggled to make visible what was invisible to the human eye by combining a deep interest in nineteenth-century scientific inquiry - including optics, psychology, physiology, and mathematics - with an idiosyncratic brand of mysticism. Rachael Ziady DeLue's George Inness and the Science of Landscape - the first in-depth examination of Inness's career to appear in several decades - demonstrates how the artistic, spiritual, and scientific aspects of Inness's art found expression in his masterful landscapes. In fact, Inness's practice was not merely shaped by his preoccupation with the nature and limits of human perception; he conceived of his labor as a science in its own right.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Arthur Dove, often credited as America s first abstract painter, created dynamic and evocative images inspired by his surroundings, from the farmland of upstate New York to the North Shore of Long Island. But his interests were not limited to nature. Challenging earlier accounts that view him as simply a landscape painter, 'Arthur Dove: Always Connect'reveals for the first time the artist s intense engagement with language, the nature of social interaction, and scientific and technological advances. Rachael Z. DeLue rejects the traditional assumption that Dove can only be understood in terms of his nature paintings and association with photographer and gallerist Alfred Stieglitz and his circle. Instead, she uncovers deep and complex connections between Dove s work and his world, including avant-garde literature, popular music, meteorology, mathematics, aviation, and World War II.'Arthur Dove'also offers the first sustained account of Dove s Dadaesque multimedia projects and the first explorations of his animal imagery and the role of humor in his art. Beautifully illustrated with works from all periods of Dove s career, this book presents a new vision of one of America s most innovative and captivating artists and reimagines how the story of modern art in the United States might be told.' This book takes on the American artist Arthur Dove's life in the studio, working away with the radio crackling, records playing, thermometers and barometers on the wall spiking and plunging, clocks ticking, telephones ringing. DeLue is particularly interested in Dove's later work--the art he produced starting in the 1920s--when he became fascinated with scientific and technological advances that were becoming commonplace. For example, sound technology was rapidly evolving in the shape of commercial radio broadcasting, talkies, records, and music itself. Dove was obsessed with the science, the materiality, of sound, and he used it as a tool in developing many paintings.

Original red leather over illustrated Plexiglas with red lettering. Paper portfolio case missing. Book accompanying an exhibition at Offramp Gallery, Pasadena, March 3 -April 14, 2013. ". the work might offer a glimpse into the origins of both conscious and subconscious contemporary thinking with regard to race, while at the same time exorcising the enduring specter that dwells in the American psyche. Animalicious. concentrates on cartoons an animated characterizations of black people from the 1930s, 40s and as recently as the 1970s, that while arguably accepted as benign by many in the dominant culture at the time, left wide latitude for disturbing interpretations. Characters include Br'er Rabbit and Tar-Baby from Song of the South, Bosko, Professor Scarecrow and Jasper from George Pal's Puppetoons, the crows from Dumbo, and characters from Ralph Bakshi's Fritz the Cat and Coonskin. The complexity of the issue raised by this genre has resulted in these cartoons being banned from public exhibition, but. never been fully excised from public consciousness." Greenfield artist statement). Beautifully executed color and b/w reproductions of Greenfield's work in various mediums, ink on wood and Duralar, acrylic, and embroidery on cotton, with seven printed parchment overlays. Rachael Z. DeLue provides a delicate analysis and characterization of Greenfield's Re-animation in her introduction. Slightly starting at title page. Printing error circled in pencil in introduction.
