Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good+ dj. Illustrated by (dj design) Isadore Seltzer (illustrator). 3rd printing (stated; see note). [good solid copy, some browning/soiling to fore-edge but otherwise just lightly shelfworn; jacket a bit edgeworn, a couple of tiny nicks, faint soiling/spotting to spine] (B&W photographs) Classic history of the early movie industry, originally published in 1926 with the personal imprimatur of Thomas Edison. (The famed inventor personally blessed -- er, signed -- every copy of the original two-volume limited edition; this reprint reproduces a version of the Edison endorsement/signature page.) The author was a trade-paper editor who was on personal terms with most of the pioneer film producers, on whose recollections much of this chronicle is based, which is simultaneously its greatest strength and its fatal flaw. It did indeed become a "standard work on the subject," as the cover blurb notes -- which also means it kept several generations of film historians busy investigating and debunking the numerous myths and half-truths promulgated within. Still, it's an entertaining and indispensible work; whatever its factual failings, it effectively captures the excitement (and exponential growth) of the movie industry in its first three decades. Although not marked as such, this was the personal copy of longtime New York Times film critic Bosley Crowther; laid in is a carbon copy of Crowther's review of the book, and a Simon and Schuster press release which quotes extensively therefrom, including Crowther's description of the book as "an absolute gold mine, a treasury of information, legend and lore about everything and about everybody." [NOTE about the "3rd printing" designation: this is actually the FIRST printing of this particular issue, with the two previous printings, the Limited Edition and the Popular Edition, both in 1926, specified on the copyright page.] ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this heavy book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order.
