Soft cover. Zustand: New. A night watchman at a sawmill on the edge of a forest tries to forge a bond with a lone fox; a mysterious woman arrives on a night train in the town of Madampi, leaving in her wake lovers withering and paralysed; the great communist leader 'AKG' mistakenly boards the general compartment of the Malabar Express and is horrified by the scene that meets his eye; a lonely station master at a derelict railway station erects on the platform a stuffed doll in his own image; a migrant labourer reads out his PhD thesis to the camels he's herding in the Gulf; Isa is declared dead from Covid in Dubai and deported to India, where ghosts are unwelcome. Shihabuddin Poithumkadavu's 'socio-horror' writings, as he calls them, dissect the hair-raising manipulations of power. Moving seamlessly between the real and the surreal, these finely crafted stories shine a light on the anxieties of the disenfranchised, the would-be preys. Macabre as they are, Shihabuddin's prose is also replete with tender, heart-warming beautyas in life, so in these tales, the light is never quite far from the dark and the unsavoury. Making Shihabuddin Poithumkadavu's work accessible to the English-reading public for the very first time, J. Devika's stellar translation of his stories marks the arrival of a world-class writer in a new language.…

Soft cover. Zustand: New. Translated for the first time into English, these 29 pieces of early writings of Malayali women (18981938)Nambutiris, Nairs, Ezhavas, Syrian Christians and two Muslimswho had access to education, reveal the vigorous debate over modern gender relations that was taking place. Women reflected on what was 'Womanly' and on education, duties, vocation and civil rolesan ongoing discussion, first influenced by reformism and later by nationalist and communist ideas. In her new Preface for this reprint, author talks of how the collection offers many genealogies for Malayali feminism, making it both local and cosmopolitan. Indeed, this genealogy enables us to address many of the challenges that mainstream feminism in India now faces, for example, that of developing intersectional analyses of patriarchal oppression. Taken together, these pieces are efforts to define, in their unique ways, 'women's perspectives' as specifically oppositional standpoints. Many are replies, rejoinders and responses to male public figures who claimed to speak on behalf of a 'general good', especially of women. …

Soft cover. Zustand: New. Kerala, 1974. Rajesh, the fourth-standard topper in a Malayalam-medium school in Tiruvalla, founded by his upper-caste Kshatriya ancestors, is excited to move to the big English-medium school there. But things go awry. Grappling with the challenges of English-medium studies, he is stuck in the middle of the rank-list. Desperation grows when the socially inferior Veeramani - the son of Rajesh's father's boss - gets the red badge for coming first. Rajesh goes into a tailspin, and even seeks divine intervention. Meanwhile, a regime deifying the idea of an Undivided Bharata gains power in the country, and a horrifying reign of persecution follows - one that might make way for Rajesh to finally own the coveted red badge. Rajesh R. Varma's acclaimed first novel, Chuvanna Badge, now brilliantly translated as The Red Badge by the award-winning J. Devika, is a searing account of the paranoia of caste privilege and the demons it births. Steeped in humour, nostalgia and violence, it is a chilling record of a memory that might actually belong to the future.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. In a small village in Kerala, people begin to feel threatened by an invisible rooster that crows at odd hours. It is heard interrupting the morning and night prayers at the temple, the mass at the church, the azaan at the mosque and the Martyrs' Day ceremony. When it hoots in the middle of the national anthem being sung at the local school, it is instantly labelled as a threat to national security. It offends the sentiments of all those who are religious, political, patriarchal, exploitative, fanatical and homophobic. Naturally, there are many baying for its blood. The witch-hunt that ensues fuels suspicions that the invisible cock might even be a human, an anarchist who is trying to destabilize the nation with help from outside. Incisive and hilarious by turns, The Cock Is the Culprit does an astute job of exposing the dark underbelly of Kerala society.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. The latest collection of Unni R's short stories in translation shines with the tone of self-critique so characteristic of his earlier writing, gentle and penetrating at the same time. His world still comprises mostly the rural and peri-urban areas of Kottayam, his birthplace. It emerges through his words as a place with layers of life that lie beyond the merely human the birds, animals, spirits, Jesus, Satan and even inanimate things have their role and place in it.The stories feature a whole range of situations and characters, who are forever assailed by an awareness of their own vulnerability. In 'Malayali Memorial', the protagonist is a low-lying, wily and seemingly powerless man in a stridently casteist family; the young man in 'Boy and Girl' is the weepy sort, yet his powerless tears seem to have the power to soften the resolve of a confident young woman. Further, this collection includes Unni's experiments with the short story form. Overall, these stories break open the hardened shells of our existence, so that empathy and compassion may find their way out.…
