First, a little background. The company in 1896: "The California Water and Mining Company owns and controls a system of canals, comprising over 240 miles in length, covering every portion of the Georgetown Divide from Loon Lake, 40 miles east of Georgetown by wagon road, to Wild Goose Flat, a point on the American River nearly o…pposite Loomis, Placer County, and from Chile Bar, on the South Fork of the American, distant only 3 miles from Placerville, to Spanish Dry Diggings, on the Middle Fork. The principal source of water supply is a series of groups of lakes lying on the summit of the Sierra, at an altitude of 6,000 feet, fed by melting snows.This county (El Dorado), generally, may claim to be among the best irrigated in the State." (Biennial Report of the State Board of Horticulture, State of California, 1896, p.102). In 1904: "The extensive water supply system of the California Water & Mining Co., together with its mining and other properties in El Dorado County, was sold at Placerville on September 23 under foreclosure proceedings, to satisfy a judgment of $153,702 in favor of the Mutual Trust Co. of New York." (Engineering and Mining Journal, Volume 78, p.561, 1904). This lot contains seven items. Three typed letters, signed, one in 1898 and two in 1903, discussing the financial condition of the California Water & Mining Co., The first, in April of 1898, from a New York law firm, to a stockholder in the California Water and Mining Co., asking for authority to vote as proxy to select a new board of directors for the struggling company. "It is proposed to elect a board of directors who will endeavor to obtain something out of this enterprise for those who have embarked in it, and to take the affairs out of the hands of the dummies who have managed the company for the last ten years." The second and third letters are regarding an attempt to evaluate the health of the company in 1903. From a San Francisco mechanical engineer, former State Mineralogist, J.J. Crawford, to the American Exchange National Bank, New York: "I think I could give you better information (about the company) if you should send someone up here to interview me or ask me questions on those points.I know the property generally, and that their water rights and franchises are valuable, and that they have a good class of customers, but as to their status, that is, whether they are in debt or not, I do not know.I regard their manager, Mr. Fitzgerald, as being a very level headed and good business man." Then, a letter from the Bank of California reporting to the New York bank: One of our officers interviewed Mr. Crawford but without very satisfactory results. He has promised to endeavor to obtain fuller information of which he will advise us later." The fourth and fifth items are carbon copies of letters two and three. The sixth item is a penciled list of six stockholders. The seventh and last item is a clipping from an unknown newspaper, undated (but 1896), reporting that the U.S. Supreme Court had ruled California's Wright Irrigation Act to be constitutional. All papers with folds, creases and handling wear, some toning, but in Very Good condition.

Situated Between the South Fork of Middle Fork and the South Fork of the American River[.] 1880[.] Julius Bien, Photo-Lith. N. Y." The map, scale 6 miles = 1 inch, shows the company's water system which included 21 reservoirs and 257 miles of water ditches and flumes, as well as the proposed aqueduct to carry water to Sacramento and the proposed narrow gauge railroad from Greenwood to Lake Tahoe by way of Georgetown. The five appendixes are: "Report upon the Property of the California Water Company" by Prof. W. Ashburner; "Report upon the Mining and Other Property of the California Water Company" by E. P. Hutchins; "Report upon the Properties of the California Water Company" by George W. Swan; "Extracts from the Report of Professor Amos Bowman, Made to the California Water Company in 1874; and "Extract from the Report of Professor Rossiter W. Raymond." A prospectus, one of several issued by the California Water and Mining Company following Amos Bowman's extensive 225-page REPORT ON THE PROPERTIES AND DOMAIN OF THE CALIFORNIA WATER COMPANY . (San Francisco: A. L. Bancroft and Company, 1874). The largest owner of water rights on the Georgetown Divide was the California Water Company, owned by a group of San Francisco investors. The company also owned mining property, including hydraulic mines. Ultimately the company owned more than 250 miles of ditches, flumes and iron pipes. The company hired Amos Bowman to appraise the company's assets. His 1874 report recommended that the company expand their mining activity in addition to being a water company which would increase the company's profitability and build the region's population. Bowman felt the company's water system could by utilized by the city of Sacramento. "However, development never occurred on this divide and though mining and agriculture increased for a time, both pretty much died out by the turn of the century" (Jean E. Starns, "Historic Mining Ditches of El Dorado County, California"). Not in Cowan (1933). Not in Rocq (1970), although see 1763 for a similar prospectus. Several tape reinforcements along spine fold, wrappers worn and lightly chipped along top and bottom edges, a good copy. Map and plate in excellent condition. OCLC reports 4 copies. (#166767).

James Ireland (c.1830deceased) worked as a mining broker in the late 19th century in California. Records suggest that he was an immigrant from Scotland, meaning that he was probably not a member of the Native Sons of the Golden West, despite the ribbon in this collection; a fraternal organization celebrating the California Gold…Rush, the Native Sons did not offer membership to those born outside the state until 2024. Ireland seemed to have lived in San Francisco and Oakland, but his mining interests were in El Dorado County. Most famously the home of Sutter's Mill, the county currently has nearly 2,600 mines on record with the USGS and sits near the northern end of the "Mother Lode" of gold-bearing quartz that runs along 120 miles of the Sierra Nevadas. Offered here is a small collection of Ireland's materials relating to various mining prospects, mainly descriptions of mines, presumably for soliciting interest in purchasing them. These include the Church Union and Red Rover mines outside of Diamond Springs, the Dry Gulch gravel mine near Pleasant Valley, the Argonaut mine in Greenwood, and the Sly Park gravel mine, probably near Pollock Pines. The descriptions give details about the locations, whether the land is under patent, what improvements there are, the mine's per-ton financials, likely costs for necessary improvements like mills, and so on. Some material pertains to mines that Ireland seemed to already own or have financial stakes in. In Shingle Springs, he managed to purchase a mine for "no money"; the previous owners were "not at all anxious to sell at the figures agreed upon" but conceded that "if the money is paid within the time agreed upon the mine shall be yours" (September 23, 1879). Ireland also owned or managed at least one mine in Nashville, though in 1879 he seems to have left his worker there in the lurch. The worker, John R. Davies, writes: "I am geting on very slow you know that one man cannot do two mens work in mining, and I have to Go and Borrow Powder + fuse when I want to put a Blast [.] Most of my things at Nashville Powder + drills + coal which I left there when I left are gone. I Expect Also to have some Money here for the first of the Month. I shall want $25.00 here to Pay my Bills at the store the Balance you will Pay to my wife on my Order, and I hope that you will do it Punctualy for she needs it and I have Earned it. you did not Pay her according to our agreement at first." (May 30, 1879) Of interest to scholars of Californian gold mining after the gold rush, especially for its detailed descriptions of lesser-known mining claims. Some items with tearing and staining, mostly not affecting legibility; overall very good to near fine. Sixteen items, mainly letters and descriptions of mining claims which total thirty-seven handwritten pages. Of the written pages: one 7 ½ x 7 ½ inch, three 8 x 5 inch, twenty 8 x 10 inch, seven 8 x 12 ½ inch, and six 8 x 14 inch. Items date between 1879 and 1902, with seven items undated. One empty envelope from "Brinckmann Quartz Crusher and Furnace Company" and one souvenir ribbon for the Placerville "Admission Day Celebration" by the Native Sons of the Golden West, 1898.
