Having retired in 1962 after thirty-five years of service at the main branch of the New York Public Library, Charlie Dornbusch relocated to "the old Hope place," a 19th century farmhouse. The bibliography of the American Civil War comprises books that deal in large part with the American Civil War. There are over 60,000 books on the war, with more appearing each month. Authors James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier stated in 2012, "No event in American history has been so thoroughly studied, not merely by historians, but by tens of thousands of other Americans who have made the war their hobby. Perhaps a hundred thousand books have been published about the Civil War." There is no complete bibliography to the war; the largest guide to books is more than 50 years old and lists over 6,000 of the most valuable titles as evaluated by three leading scholars. Many specialized topics such as Abraham Lincoln, women, and medicine have their own lengthy bibliographies. The books on major campaigns typically contain their own specialized guides to the sources and literature. Charle…s Dornbusch (1917-1990) was the Vedder Research Library's first librarian and the moving force behind its official creation. A man of countless unique talents and interests, he has been described as a librarian, bibliographer, writer, publisher, bookseller, antiques collector, and member of numerous learned societies. Born and raised in New York City, Mr. Dornbusch attended night school to attain his college education - at the same time working at the New York Public Library where he quickly became full-time staff. He ended up staying at the New York Public Library the entire 38 years of his career. In 1963 Charles moved to Cornwallville, NY where the farm on Strong Road became his permanent residence and the base for many of his future endeavors. . Hope Farm Press was Mr. Dornbusch's other great achievement. He ran a small book and print shop from his home in Cornwallville during the 1960s, 70s and 80s, printing works which he had authored himself as well as various local history selections of a significant nature. Hope Farm Press in this way became responsible for the distribution of many important and otherwise out-of-print histories related to Greene County and the surrounding region, and many publications from Hope Farm Press are featured on the Vedder Library's shelves. Mr. Dornbusch went on to further achievement pursuing his other passion: Military History. He had served as a Staff Sergeant during World War II with the 409th Infantry Regiment in Europe, although his interest in the field may have predated his service. In his later years, Mr. Dornbusch went on to write an authoritative bibliography on the American Civil War, as well as numerous unit histories focusing the Armed Forces of the United States and the Canadian Military in both the 19th and 20th centuries. He was genuinely prolific and several of his works remain highly regarded among scholars today. This revision is an attempt first to, as completely as possible, to add the Civil War works published since Volume IV was published in 1987 and to add some of the titles missed in the earlier editions. All materials from the original Volume IV is included, although renumbered. of necessity, to accommodate the added materials. To avoid confusions between numbering on previous volumes, the numbering in this revision starts with 4001. Unlike the traditional bibliography done in the library collections of selected libraries, this revision of the Military Bibliography of the Civil War was compiled using mostly on-line catalogs. The primary reference collections used were The University of Wisconsin, Madison (MADCAT) which includes the fine collection of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin (Established by the Wisconsin GAR and aggressively maintained and updated) and the Library of Congress. Used also, but to a lesser extent, were the libraries of Penn State University, The Pennsylvania State library and archives, Chicago public library, New York public library, the library of the Military History Institute (Carlisle, PA.) and numerous other state and university libraries. Because of the vast amount of Civil War material added since Volume IV was originally published, this update/revision includes only works that can be classified as books or pamphlets. The volume of magazine and journal articles is too overwhelming to attempt here. The format follows the original three Dornbusch volumes. In the general reference added are sections for Cartography, Causes, Home From and Women. In Armed Forces added are sections on Leadership, and Strategy and Tactics. There is a short section at the end of the state units for the Confederal Regular Army also. A major change is a rearran.

They feature new, rare, and out of print books, as well as the Gettysburg magazine, historical art prints, maps, and much more. For nearly three decades, Charles E. Dornbusch (1907-1990) operated his bookselling and publishing enterprise. He attended the City College of NY as a special student. While attending college he was employed at the New York Public Library. He ended up being employed at the NY Public Library for 35 years serving as an Acquisition Specialist. During his service to the library he traveled extensively both in the US and abroad for the Acquisition Program. His specialty was Military. His four volume Military Bibliography of the Civil War is now a standard reference guide in the U.S. Mr. Dornbusch also served his country during World War II, serving in the US Army and being discharged as a Staff Sergeant. Having retired in 1962 after thirty-five years of service at the main branch of the New York Public Library, Charlie Dornbusch relocated to "the old Hope place," a 19th century farmhouse. The bibliography of the American Civil War comprises books that deal in large part with the American Civil War. There are over 60,000 books on the war, with more appearing each month. Authors James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier stated in 2012, "No event in American history has been so thoroughly studied, not merely by historians, but by tens of thousands of other Americans who have made the war their hobby. Perhaps a hundred thousand books have been published about the Civil War." There is no complete bibliography to the war; the largest guide to books is more than 50 years old and lists over 6,000 of the most valuable titles as evaluated by three leading scholars. Many specialized topics such as Abraham Lincoln, women, and medicine have their own lengthy bibliographies. The books on major campaigns typically contain their own specialized guides to the sources and literature. The comprehensive work by Dornbusch has been updated by subsequent bibliographers, but it is unusual for an item to be identified from the period of its compilation that was not already in the original Dornbusch compilation. This book is the culmination of four preliminary checklists produced since 1947 in approximately the same manner. It represents an expansion in time coverage and an improvement in format that will simplify the task of locating material on a specific unit. In so far as possible, the Office of the Chief of Military History has provided assistance on certain problems. The demand in Special Services libraries world wide for unit history material by military personnel of all ranks has been continual. As a result, The Adjutant General's Office, particularly its Library and Service Club Branch, Special Services Division, has been the motivating force behind the publication of this bibliography. The scope of this list includes unit histories from the end of the Civil War to the Korean conflict. Air Force and Navy histories are omitted. National Guard and militia histories are not included unless the history concerns a period when the unit was Federalized. Charles Emil Dornbusch (1907-1990) was the Vedder Research Library's first librarian and the moving force behind its official creation. A man of countless unique talents and interests, he has been described as a librarian, bibliographer, writer, publisher, bookseller, and member of numerous learned societies. Mr. Dornbusch attended night school to attain his college education - at the same time working at the New York Public Library where he quickly became full-time staff. He ended up staying at the New York Public Library the entire 38 years of his career. Mr. Dornbusch went on to further achievement pursuing his passion for Military History. He had served as a Staff Sergeant during World War II with the 409th Infantry Regiment in Europe, although his interest in the field may have predated his service. During his service to the library he traveled extensively both in the US and abroad for the Acquisition Program. His specialty was Military. His four volume Military Bibliography of the Civil War is now a standard reference guide in the U.S. Many of his other checklists and bibliographies have also become standard for works up to the time his compilations were published. In his later years, Mr. Dornbusch went on to write an authoritative bibliography on the American Civil War, as well as numerous unit histories focusing the Armed Forces of the United States and the Canadian Military in both the 19th and 20th centuries. He was genuinely prolific and several of his works remain highly regarded among scholars today.
