Con la sua filosofia vitalistica, che sconfinava nella metafisica, Driesch si opponeva alle teorie meccanicistiche degli evoluzionisti, a cominciare da quella di Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919) del quale era stato allievo a Jena prima di laurearsi. Hans Adolf Eduard Driesch (1867-1941 in Leipzig) Biologe und Naturphilosoph, studierte ab 1886 an der Universität Freiburg bei August Weismann, ab 1887 an der Universität Jena Zoologie bei Ernst Haeckel und Oscar Hertwig und Botanik bei Ernst Stahl. 1889 hielt er sich auf der neu gegründeten meeresbiologischen Station Plymouth auf. 1890 unternahm er Studienreisen nach Indien und Lesina. Ab 1891 war er an der Zoologischen Station Neapel, wo er experimentelle entwicklungsmechanische Studien am Seeigelkeim machte und ihm durch "Schüttelversuche" die Trennung der ersten Furchungszellen gelang. Deren Weiterentwicklung zu ganzen Individuen bestimmten seinen Weg zum Neovitalisten, dessen zentraler Vertreter er wurde. Ab 1900 war er Privatgelehrter in Heidelberg. 1907 erhielt er einen Lehrstuhl für Natürliche Theologie in Aberdeen (Schottland). Dort entstand auch sein philosophisches Hauptwerk. 1909 wurde Driesch Privatdozent für Naturphilosophie an der Universität Heidelberg, 1911 wurde er außerordentlicher Professor und 190 Ordinarius für Philosophie an der Universität Köln, 1921 ordentlicher Professor und Direktor des Philosophischen Seminars der Universität Leipzig. Ab 1924 beschäftigte er sich auch mit der Parapsychologie, fungierte 1926-27 als Präsident der Society for Psychical Research und publizierte 1932 eine Methodenlehre für dieses Gebiet.
