This book showcases amazing artwork by Jess (1923-2004), who was a top-notch collage artist, perhaps the finest since the German Dadaist/Surrealist Max Ernst. Best known for these "paste-up" collages, Jess also created paintings, drawings, and sculptural works. Robert Duncan's poems that appear in his script in this book "were written to illustrate the artist's paste-ups." Duncan and Jess were lifelong partners and shared a home in San Francisco. They collaborated on many other projects. This title was originally published by The Divers Press in 1955, which this 1972 Sand Dollar edition revises and expands upon. Second edition [revised and expanded]. One of 2000 copies in illustrated wrappers.

About JESS (from Wikipedia): ******Jess Collins, b.1923 d.2004, known today simply as Jess, was an American visual artist. He met Robert Duncan in 1950 and began a relationship with the poet that lasted for 37 years until Duncan's death in 1988. The two men lived and worked for decades from their historic Victorian home in the Mission District, "a wonderland of an old house, filled to the roof with art". Jess's art received international attention with solo exhibitions at the The Museum of Modern Art in New York (1974), the Galleria Odyssia in Rome (1975), the Wadsworth Atheneum[11] (1975), the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts (1977), the Berkeley Art Museum (1980), and The Arts Club of Chicago (1981). In 2019, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art mounted the show "Mythos, Psyche, Eros: Jess and California", which paired paintings and collages: "that privileged the mystical, whimsical, and absurd" by "one of San Francisco's most enigmatic figures.". (The title is given as 'Translation' on the title page, 'Translations' externally.) This variant differs from the (taller) Black Sparrow Press special edition by listing Odyssia Gallery on the spine, first page (which is blank in the hardback) and title page, and the colophon has been adapted to specify the 1000 paperback copies. Lightly spotted to the head edge, slightly rubbed, and moderately bumped in places, the upper wrapper with a couple of short scratches/impressions near its tail edge, and a few leaves dog-eared (probably in production), but Very Good overall. This copy has been signed by Jess and inscribed to Tom (Raworth). Signed by Artist.
