En los últimos años muchos investigadores enfrentados a la complejidad de los sistemas a desarrollar han comenzado a buscar en la naturaleza, y en particular en la evolución, un mecanismo que permita la obtención de sus sistemas de manera automática a partir de su interacción con los entornos y las tareas a desarrollar. La disciplina resultante de esta aproximación se denomina robótica evolutiva. La evolución artificial simula en un ordenador el procedimiento por el cual la selección natural prioriza la conservación del material genético de los individuos mejor adaptados al medio y tarea. Si las poblaciones de individuos que evolucionan y que sufren los procesos de selección, cruce y mutación están formadas por estructuras que permiten el control de un robot, o incluso que definen su morfología, podemos establecer un procedimiento para la obtención automática de los robots y sus controladores. El libro se centra en el estudio de temas como los algoritmos para simular la evolución, la evaluación de la calidad en robots, la coevolución para la obtención automática y simultánea de comportamientos y morfologías óptimas, los procesos de desarrollo, las estructuras que soportarán el control y las ventajas de utilización de computación neuronal en robótica, o el uso de aprendizaje y su interrelación con la evolución simulada a través de procesos de Lamarck o favorecida por el Efecto Baldwin. Todo lo tratado en el libro se apoya en ejemplos reales de investigaciones recientes, algunas finalizadas y otras en curso, de universidades y centros de investigación de todo el mundo.
