Softcover. California Museum of Photography, University of California, Riverside. 1986. Softcover. Quarto (large format, staple-bound). Very good. Book is clean, with a strong binding, and has no tears or writing - bears little evidence of use. Stereographic photographs of California, primarily in the mid-to-late 1800's. These double images, at the peak of popularity during this time period, would often fetch three times the amount of money as a typical photograph when viewed through a stereoscope or special spectacles, as the stereograph produces a three-dimensional effect. Most of the book is comprised of the stereographs, while eight pages at onset are devoted to commentary and history of this unique form of photography. Affixed to back panel is a 'pocket stereo viewer', with instructions, for viewing all the images as they were meant to be seen. Includes references. 32 pages.
