New ISBN: 9782953661514 CATALOG: Turkish & Islamic arts KEYWORDS: Ottoman art History of art Tile Ceramics Metalworking Textiles Silk Calligraphy Calligrapher Miniature Firman imperial Orientalism Painting Sothebys' Paris is to host "Turkophilia Revealed", a stunning exhibition of Ottoman Art from private collections. The exhibition will be held during the 14th International Congress on Turkish Art and will feature important examples of silverware, ceramics, textiles, calligraphy and Turqueries. At the outset, collections of Islamic art formed in Europe in the second half of the nineteenth century were assembled by keen amateurs with the aim of presenting a coherent historical account covering all techniques and periods. At the same time, these collections served a practical purpose, that they should be a source of inspiration for both scholars and craftsmen working either in Paris, London or other European countries. In this way, the collections helped to confer a dignity and vitality to the decorative arts of Europe. In this context, Ottoman art acted in the present as a model for contemporary work of art as well as a means of shedding light upon the past. The taste of these collectors was naturally drawn towards shimmering carpets, colourful ceramics, and textiles woven in striking colours. In contrast, the historical value of these objects, witnesses to ancient cultures, complex and varied, was rarely sensed and when it was, it was more often ignored. And yet it was not long before art historians began to attempt to impose classifications on this art along tentatively drawn distinctions. The task would not be an easy one as 'Oriental Art' did not allow for simple apprehension, particularly in matters of date and determining origin, and in the face of existing prejudices.
