They were high~value targets. And the NKVD, the forerunners of the KGB, needed them for a very special project: They had been instructed to compile a biography of Adolf Hitler. Stalin had never been able to shake off the nightmare of Adolf Hitler. Just as in 1941 he refused to understand that Hitler had broken their non~aggression pact, he was, in 1945, unwilling to believe that the dictator had committed suicide amidst the charred debris of the Berlin bunker. Perhaps he was still alive, waiting to launch another surprise attack. In his paranoia, Stalin ordered his secret police, the NKVD, to explore in detail every last vestige of the private life of the only man he considered a worthy opponent, and to clarify bevond doubt the circumstances of his death. For months the two Germans were interrogated daily, their stories cross~checked, until the NKVD agents were convinced that they had the fullest possible account of the life of Adolf Hitler. The book that they compiled is remarkable for two particular qualities. It is extremely intimate in its portrait of the Fuhrer, from his specific directions to Linge as to how his body was to be burned beyond recognition, to his sense of humour. And it is almost as revealing, often by what it does not say, about the intended reader: Josef Stalin. Nowhere, for instance, does the dossier criticize Hitler's treatment of the Jews. Hitler and Stalin: If there is any pattern to be imposed on the twentieth century, then it must lie in the mutual antagonism of these two dictators, who, between them, wrought devastation on the European continent. This compelling, first~hand narrative of a decade of service in Hitler's headquarters, was presented to Stalin in a limited edition of one, and for over fifty years was kept under lock and key in a Russian archive. Never before published in its entirety, it is groundbreaking not only as one of the most authentic sources of information on the Third Reich and its innermost circles, but also as a portrait of a tyrant, for a tyrant.
