Buch Erstausgabe
Cloth. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. First Edition. Hardback. First Edition. Recent Archaeological Excavations in Europe. Slight shelf wear to edge D/J. In this book, Rupert Bruce-Mitford has succeederd in the difficult task of selecting excavations which represent the great volume of contemporary archaeological fieldwork in Europe. Great excavations in eleven eastern and western European countries are covered, and the periods treated reflect the vast span of archaeology from the Palaeolithhic to the Middle Ages. The chapters are written by the directors of the excavations and those most closely involved with them, and are expertly translated. They provide detailed information on excavations for which, in many cases, full reports are not yet available. Nine of the contributions discuss specific archaeological sites. These include the Celtic oppidum and sanctuary at Entremont, Provence; the medieval Hanseatic port at Bryggen Bergen; the trading settlement at Helgo on Sweden's Lake Malar; and the most remarkable of recent Anglo-Saxon excavations, the settlements and cemetries at Mucking, Essex. Equally important excavations in Czechoslovakia, the German Federal Republic, the Netherlands and Hungary are reported. The study of the Viking camps in Denmark deals with a class of monument rather than a single site, and the chapter on the Soviet Union is of special interest since it provides a broad survey of recent fieldwork which, with few exceptions, has hitherto been unknown in the west. Illustrated.335 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
