"Tryout was an amateur press journal published from 1914 to 1946 by Charles W. Smith of Haverhill, Massachusetts. It was connected to the National Amateur Press Association. Smith (1852-1948) was a friend and correspondent of H. P. Lovecraft; Tryout was the first outlet for the H. P. Lovecraft short stories "The Cats of Ulthar" (November 1920) , "The Terrible Old Man" (July 1921) , "The Tree" (October 1921) , and "In the Vault" (November 1925). Smith provided the plot idea for "In the Vault". Tryout also published non-fiction articles and several poems by Lovecraft. The publication was noted for its typographical errors, which Lovecraft referred to as "tryoutisms".".

In den WarenkorbWrappers. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No dust-wrapper issued. 1st Edition. First edition, first and only printing of an unknown number of copies but probably around 500 or less. Small 4to. Approx 8.5 x 7 inches. Original printed wrappers with illustration by Jason Eckhardt. 80pp and 1p errata leaf at rear. Fine in fine wrappers. Not price clipped and displaying the original price of $5.95 on rear wrapper. A very nice, clean copy of this increasingly scarce piece of Lovecraftiania. Although bearing no ownership markings of any kind, this copy was from the collection of the late Peter Haining (1940-2007). Peter Haining was a British publisher, anthologist and writer, a collaborator with August Derleth and a long-standing friend of Ray Bradbury, Robert Bloch and others. He was a collector of macabre and obscure fiction and had been responsible for the first British publication in book form of many of H.P. Lovecraft's stories and other materials that had previously only appeared in pulp magazines such as Weird Tales (see Michael Ashley, William G. Contento : The Supernatural Index). Haining, whilst editorial director of New English Library and Four Square, was also responsible for launching or reviving the careers of many horror writers, some of whom were to become celebrated stalwarts of the genre and it was probably he who first introduced the British writers published by Arkham House (including Basil Copper) to August Derleth. See our other Abe listings for several other H.P. Lovecraft, August Derleth and Arkham House items from Peter Haining's collection.
