Stated First Edition, 1st printing (complete number line starts w/2). 304pp. Bright, clean & tight copy, unread, in Very Good condition (erstwhile remainder has little red Random House stamp on page head/tail, o/w unmarked), Good jacket has bottom spinal tear, repaired & o/w bright/intact. "This book presents eighteen revealing interviews, public and private, in which Robert Penn Warren participated between 1950 and 1978. The editors' introduction gives an indication of their nature and significance: [] 'The interviews of Red Warren reveal much of this man who is so concealed in his writings. They involve talking, much of it spontaneous, little of it planned. They have no direction predetermined except the lives, interests, and personalities of the speakers. The shifts of direction may be sudden. Warren may thrust a spear deep into the waters of the past and snag a thought which he had forgotten for decades. The interview just as quickly may shift to some principle to which Warren has adhered deeply for all the years. Or life on the street or in the cloakroom may furnish him with an anecdote that ends with a chuckle and proceeds to shaking laughter and finally to new light on new issues and events. He sometimes twists a question and makes a reply which provides a new meaning without destroying the point of the questioner. So the personal Warren may be known more in his interviews than in anything else he has presented for public view. The final result is that the reader sees a complex but genuine and important person and comprehends more than ever the views of the man and the art and the meanings of his works." [jacket copy] Interviewers include William Styron, Ralph Ellison, Allen Tate, John Crowe Ransom, Flannery O'Connor, Eleanor Clark, C. Vann Woodward, Bill Moyers, Edwin Newman & Dick Cavett. VG hardcover w/sharp corners & crisp edges w/some very slight foxing, bright pages in a spruce volume, wrapped in an G intact jacket.

Hardcover. Zustand: New condition. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New dust jacket. First Printing of the First Edition. Oxford & New York: Oxford University Press, 1995. A gorgeous, pristine copy in perfect condition. Brand New in a Brand New dust jacket. Bright, shiny, clean, square and tight. Sharp corners. NO owner's name or bookplate. NOT a remainder. This traces the history of children's books in Britain, the USA, and Canada from the first printed books through modern times. 240 illustrations, including many beautiful full color plates. First printing with "First published 1995" so stated and complete number row (13579 10 8642) on the copyright page. From the publisher: "From the wise and foolish beasts of Aesop's Fables to the creatures in Max's closet in Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are, from Frances Hodgson Burnett's Little Lord Fauntleroy to the angst-ridden teenagers in Judy Blume's novels, children's literature reveals not only how drastically our perceptions of children have changed, but how tenaciously the age-old tears, fears, schemes, and dreams of childhood have stayed the same. Lavishly illustrated and wonderfully eclectic in scope, CHILDREN'S LITERATURE: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY celebrates this brilliant legacy and its lasting relevance to childhoods past and present. Edited by the acclaimed children's author and editor Peter Hunt, and written by a truly international team of experts, this delightful volume is unsurpassed in breadth and depth. It traces the history of children's literature in English from the earliest hornbooks and classical translations, through nonsense rhymes, fairy and folk tales, to today's multimedia comic books and computer-based interactive adventures. Ranging across the centuries from Great Britain to the United States to Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, its lively commentary is accompanied by hundreds of full-color and black- and-white illustrations, including many rare reproductions. All the classics of the genre are examined: Old Mother Hubbard, Oliver Twist, the legends and tales of Hans Andersen, Edward Lear, and Oscar Wilde, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Little Women, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Jungle Book, and many, many more. Here as well are works less literary but no less beloved: The Velveteen Rabbit, and the series adventures of the Bobbsey Twins, the Hardy Boys, Enid Blyton's school girl heroines, and the inimitable Nancy Drew. Special attention is paid to the most popular and acclaimed of today's writing for children: the wondrous pictures books of Chris Van Allsburg, Patricia MacLachlan's Sarah Plain and Tall, and others destined to be classics of tomorrow. Throughout, there is in-depth discussion not only of the influences and inspiration of individual authors, but of the underlying social forces that shaped the tastes and perceptions of writers and their young readers alike. Beautiful to look at and a joy to read, this landmark volume is at once an indispensable reference and a compelling history of a vital part of our literature. It is filled with the unexpected insights and sense of discovery that distinguish the best writing for children." Bound in the original black boards, stamped in shiny gold. Complete with pristine dust jacket. First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover. New condition/New dust jacket. xiv, 378pp. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.

B/w photographs, b/w vignette illustrations by Denys Watkins-Pitchford, bibliography. Claret boards, spine titled in gilt. Edition limited to 950 copies. Slightly bumped o/w near fine in dust-wrapper. Signed and numbered by Bryan Holden. "BB grew up a keen observer of birdlife and was expert in recognising the songs and sounds of the various species, as well as understanding their particular characteristics. He drew and painted hundreds of pictures of birds and described their antics and way of life in his many books and magazine articles in a most fluent and intimate manner. Perhaps his greatest attribute was his skill in observing and describing the commonplace and everyday happenings and bringing them vividly alive. The arrival of the year's first swallow; the squabbling of house sparrows; the fairy-like song of the reed warbler; the emotive sight and sound of flighting geese - 'the hounds of heaven' - streaking across a sunset sky. BB's Birds is a book to dip into and to return to time and again, as one might a book of favorite poems. It is a joyous celebration: an anthology which includes extracts from some of the finest writings of this true-born countryman and self-taught naturalist. Never again will anyone be able to observe and record the English countryside as he did. There will never be another like BB." .

B/w photographs, b/w illustrations by Denys Watkins-Pitchford. Cloth-backed boards. Fine unread copy. Not numbered. This is the diary of the 17 year-old Denys Watkins-Pitchford, covering the year 1922, when he was at Northampton School of Art, but still living at home in Lamport. As with Confessions of a Coastal Gunner, this diary was given by 'BB' to Badger Walker, and has now been edited by Bryan Holden. Foreword by John McEwen, introductory essay by the editor. Chapters are; January; February; March; April; May; June; July; August; September; October; November; December; Addenda; The Author; The BB Society. A list of 'BB's books is included.
