First edition, first printing, edited by Cornelius Ryan and featuring contributions by Werner von Braun, Willy Ley, Fred L. Whipple, Joseph Kaplan, Heinz Haber, and Oscar Schachter. Profusely illustrated throughout—including Chesley Bonestell's celebrated paintings that helped define the public's imagination of space exploration—it remains one of the most influential and visually striking works of popular space literature of the 1950s. New York: The Viking Press, 1952. Publisher's original green cloth, stamped in silver; pp. 147, illustrated throughout. A very good copy in a good or better, unclipped dust jacket. In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fair. 1st Edition. * AS PICTURED : FIVE IMAGES * FIRST EDITION, as stated. 1952. (ie First British Edition, coinciding with American ). 4to; red boards, gilt lettering to spine - predominantly square and tidy, darkening a little with age, corners very slightly indeed bu…mped. pp : xiv + 147. Some minor foxing to fore-edge and first and last few pages, nothing of note - the text is mercifully foxing-free. The illustrated eps and other colour pictures bright and clear. A very small name to Half-Title page top, otherwise no markings or inscriptions and minimal evidence of use. In unclipped dustwrapper (21s net), which is predominantly clean, bright and complete, but with numerous small nicks and creases which have been repaired/supported with white adhesive labels verso (no selotape!). Now protected with clear, removable sleeve, and making this a very presentable used copy. To quote Sir Harold Spencer Jones, The Astronomer Royal, from his Foreword : " To conquer space would be an achievement surpassing anything that man has yet accomplished : the greater therefore is the challenge. There are those who are prepared to accept the challenge, and who can say that they will not succeed? This book shows that their faith is not mere idle fancy but that there are solid grounds for believing that sooner or later success will be theirs." FREE P&P IN UK.
