She was known not just for her writing, but also for oral performances of her work. Stuart has been characterized as belonging to the school of "American local color writing that emphasizes regional c…haracteristics in landscape, way of life, and language." Stuart's treatment of blacks forms a significant portion of her corpus and, if potentially troublesome today, "contemporary critics acclaimed her as providing an authentic representation of African Americans." Rare and collectible. Brown leather binding, gold decoration and lettering on front board, gold titles on spine. Eight illustrations by Pottbast. This is a used book. Pages are clean and bright with no markings, notes, or highlighting and have deckled edges. Previous owner's inscription dated 1903 written on front endpaper along with a price; not ex-library. Binding is a bit loose but all pages are present. No fading on boards. Corners lightly bumped. A good reading copy. Edward Pottbast (illustrator).
