The project was never filmed, in part (as Asimov notes in his introduction, actually written in 1987 for the three-part serialization in "Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine") because "the picture would have cost some $30 million to make," which was considered prohibitive, and in part because "The producers wanted Harlan to make the robots 'cute,' like R2-D2, and they also wanted him to make Susan Calvin young and pretty like Princess Leia." A 2004 Will Smith cop-detective vehicle about a robot rebellion used the title, though screen credits admitted the filmed "I, Robot" was merely "suggested" by Asimov's short story collection, while also using elements of his "Caves of Steel." The production budget? Um . . . $120 million. 275 pp. Reduced from $34.
