Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. Publisher: Collection Petit Format, Montreal, 1951 222 pp; clean example with general wear to the covers, likely an unread (at least completely) copy as several of the leaves remain uncut. Rare French Canadian paperback edition of this novel. Erle Stanley Gardner is named as the author on the title page. perhaps in an attempt to sell more copies. NOTE: Patrick Quentin, Q. Patrick and Jonathan Stagge were pen names under which Hugh Callingham Wheeler (19 March 1912 - 26 July 1987), Richard Wilson Webb (August 1901 - December 1966), Martha Mott Kelly (30 April 1906-2005) and Mary Louise White Aswell (3 June 1902 - 24 December 1984) wrote detective fiction. In some foreign countries their books have been published under the variant Quentin Patrick. Most of the stories were written by Webb and Wheeler in collaboration, or by Wheeler alone. Their most famous creation is the amateur sleuth Peter Duluth. In 1963, the story collection The Ordeal of Mrs. Snow was given a Special Edgar Award by the Mystery Writers of America. (Canadian Vintage Paperback, Erle Stanley Gardner).

Author's four-line ink inscription "to the Houston Exchange | Club, from | Erle Johnston | July 14/1998" at top of half-title page (the Houston Exchange Club presumably being a Houston, Mississippi civic group as the book was acquired from a Tupelo, MS estate); interior pages are otherwise clean. Binding remains fairly crisp. A very good+ copy in a very good dust jacket. With Foreword by Mississippi political columnist Bill Minor, Preface, b/w illustrations, and Index. Features essays regarding Mississippi's 20th century political history including the turbulent civil rights era with a focus on issues, legislative intrigue, deal-making, officeholder corruption as well as Democratic and Republican Party candidates and their state legislature, gubernatorial, and US Congressional campaigns. Major figures include Governor and Senator Theodore Bilbo, Senator John Bell Williams, Governor Dennis Murphree, Senator John Stennis, Senator James Eastland, Senator Pat Harrison, Governor Ross Barnett, activist Charles Evers, Paul Johnson, James Meredith, Governor William Waller, Governor William Winter, among many others. Born in Louisiana but raised in Grenada, Mississippi, Erle Johnston purchased the Scott County Times newspaper in Forest, Mississippi in 1941 and built upon his career as a reporter and publisher with frequent work in public relations and state political campaigns. His most notable affiliation to the latter was the 1959 election of Governor Ross Barnett who rewarded Johnston with an appointment to the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission in 1960 where he served as Director from 1963 to 1968. Johnston died in September 1995 before completing a follow-up Book Two. {MS Shelf #7} Description copyright David Hallinan, Bookseller ISBN 0963910906.
