Octavo, original black cloth, printed paper labels affixed to front and spine panels. First U.S. edition. One of the many anthologies that Rhys and Dawson-Scott edited, now rather uncommon. Sources range from the Arabian Nights to standard authors such as Henry James, de Maupassant, O. Henry and Lafcadio Hearn to obscure ones such as Austin Harrison, Edgell Rickwood, A. H. Hamer, etc. Dawson-Scott also wrote some supernatural fiction. A bit of rubbing to cloth at edges, spine label age-darkened, top edge of text block dusty, a sound, good to very good copy. (#112154).

Octavo, pp. [1-10] 11-367 [368: blank] [note: first leaf is a blank; an "acknowledgments" leaf is laid in], original green cloth, front and rear panels stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in black. First edition. An anthology of thrillers by contemporary British authors generally of a "literary" reputation, some (such as Yeats, Doyle, Maugham, Jacobs) still well-known while others now obscure. About half are tales of supernatural horror, while the others present crime and adventure with a macabre accent. All but five are reprinted from other collections. Part of a series of similarly titled collections that Scott and Rhys edited for this publisher, brought out by Appleton in America. The UK editions are considerably scarcer, especially in dust jacket. Bleiler (1978), p. 166. Not in Reginald (1979; 1992). Mild foxing to fore and bottom edges of text block, else a fine, bright copy in very good 3/6 printed dust jacket with light wear at edges, short tears at upper spine folds and upper rear flap fold, the three with internal tape mends, and some general dust soiling. A pretty nice example of this uncommon jacket. (#130634).
