In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very good. First Edition. The first book devoted to the city of Pasadena and the communities of the surrounding San Gabriel Valley, serving as both a tourists' guide and helpful prospectus for potential émigrés. Farnsworth, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Pasadena, served as both writer and editor of this work, compiling articles by twenty-two different authors (including many Pasadena residents) on various aspects of life in the region. Among the highlights are "History of Pasadena" (Perry M. Green), "The San Gabriel Valley (Jeanne C. Carr), "The University of Southern California" (M. M. Bovard), "Climates" (Abbot Kinney), "California as a Health Resort" (Dr. J. P. Widney), and "The Sierra Madre Mountains (John Muir). The first Pasadena directory, providing names, addresses, property acreage, year of arrival, and state of origin is appended at the rear. Despite the hyperbole of the title, Farnsworth expresses his intention to rectify the exaggerations of earlier writers, in particular those of Charles Nordhoff ("California: For Health, Pleasure and Residence;" 1872), whose delight in the temperate climate and fertility of the soil often blinded them to the fundamental aridity of Southern California. Tall octavo: 132 pp. with 4 halftone relief illustrations from photographs by George Weingarth, 5 plates of wood engravings, and 15 wood engraved textual illustrations, with a full page map of Pasadena at the rear. Issued in a variety in cloth of various colors and also in wrappers, this copy is in the original blue cloth with elaborate gilt and blind-stamped borders, floral ornaments, and decorative titling. Period ink presentation inscription to a prefatory blank leaf. Some mild staining along the bottom edge; else very good. Dawson Eighty 17.
