Cloth Covered Boards. Zustand: Very Good. Remarkable condition; so remarkable in fact we believe the cover may have been professionally re-bound, but if so they did an incredible job. Six (6) fold-out maps attached at back and in nice shape, only one of them has a small tear at bottom. Slight edgewear, very slight foxing to a fe…w of the pages, a tiny "bite" trail (presumably by a silverfish who didn't get very far) on title page which amazingly does not go through to other pages; otherwise all appears to be clean, tight, and unmarked. A nice sturdy copy.

This examination of the battle was intended as a guide for those wishing to study the various military movements but also includes numerous quotations from communications during the battle. Gustav Fiebeger graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1879. The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Colonel Gustav Joseph Fiebeger, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I, as Professor of Civil and Military Engineering at the U.S. Military Academy. As head of the Department of Civil and Military Engineering Colonel Fiebeger for 26 years instructed, both personally and by textbook, the officers of the Army in the principles of warfare, principles later fruitfully applied by many of these officers as commanders in the World War. The Battle of Gettysburg was fought July 1-3, 1863, in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, by Union and Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The battle involved the largest number of casualties of the entire war and is often described as the war's turning point due to the Union's decisive victory and concurrence with the Siege of Vicksburg. Union Maj. Gen. George Meade's Army of the Potomac defeated attacks by Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, halting Lee's invasion of the North. There were 72 Medals of Honor awarded for the Gettysburg Campaign. 64 of the awards were for actions taken during the battle itself, with the first recipient being awarded in December 1864. The last Medal of Honor was posthumously awarded to Lieutenant Alonzo Cushing in 2014. Film records survive of two Gettysburg reunions, held on the battlefield. At the 50th anniversary (1913), veterans re-enacted Pickett's Charge in a spirit of reconciliation, a meeting that carried great emotional force for both sides. At the 75th anniversary (1938), 2500 veterans attended, and there was a ceremonial mass handshake across a stone wall. This was recorded on sound film, and some Confederates can be heard giving the Rebel Yell. Jonathan Lee (Cover Art) (illustrator).
