Contemporary or near contemporary full tree calf, with contrasting labels and Grecian motifs to spine, marbled endpapers, edges speckled, small booksellers label to flyleaf R. R. Balfour. Early neat signature John Taylor to title pages. The set in very good condition. Cooke was a publishing revolutionary. He set out to produce well-illustrated novels that could fit in the pocket, a precursor of Penguin books. Here are found the first 63 volumes of his new publishing endeavour, bound up in sequence. Individually, each volume usually has an engraved title page and from one to four engraved plates, most with their original tissue guards. In more detail, this set runs as follows: 1. In between the two books in the final volume is bound a single leaf publisher s advertisement, explaining that they are 18mo, printed on a purposely commissioned wove paper, printed in a new type, with embellishments, with the utmost neatness. A remarkable set. So far as we can tell, the volumes appear to be mainly or all the first Cooke issues, have frequently series engraved title pages where appropriate, and individually some of them are uncommon the Lennox Henrietta (ESTC N32859) shows no examples in the UK for example. Would be useful for bibliographic analysis, or as an attractive cornerstone of an eighteenth century literature collection.
