A year-long exploration of the life cycle of a much-loved and much-threatened wild creature, the Alaskan fur seal in the great Pribilof Islands. Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Leonard Everett Fisher (illustrator). 1st Edition. First Edition (Scribner 'A' on the copyright page). Signed and inscribed by the artist/illustrator Leonard Everett Fisher on the half-title page ( 'For Leonard _____, With my very Best Wishes, Leonard Everett Fisher.' ) You can see the orange covers in the photos. They're in excellent condition. They're very clean. There is actually a very light illustration of a seal on the bottom third of the front cover. You can see it clearly if you tilt the book toward the light. I'm not sure what the scan will bring forth. It's nice. The gilt lettering on the spine is quite bright. The six edges and four corners are in excellent shape. The spine ends have a little bit of the usual crinkling. The page edges are very clean. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The interior of the book is in excellent condition. The inside covers and endpapers are in excellent condition, front and rear, and form the same map which is titled 'The Track of the Golden Seal.' There is a little bit of the western part of the United States and much of Canada, Alaska, and Siberia, also a number of islands. The pages are semi-glossy and thus have a light bit of toning at their margins. They are also exceptionally clean. I'm not finding any instances of soiling. I'm also not finding any creasing. There are no markings. No attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The chapters are the months of the year beginning in July and ending in June. The prologue is titled Approaching the Year of the Seal. There is an Appendix (On The Origin Of Seals), Reference Notes, Seven Accounts Of The Fur Seal: A Selected And Annotated Bibliography, and finally an Index. As always, Mr. Fisher's illustrations are special. The front cover of the dust jacket will show you that. You can see the jacket in the first few photos. It's in nice shape. It has little toning off the top edge of the front and rear cover and some amber toning on the lower half of the rear cover. There are two small tears off the top edge of the rear cover. The flaps are in solid shape. They do have some of this amber toning and the top corner of the front flap is clipped, removing the price. The jacket will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. From the dust jacket: 'Whether the author writes of seals or men, his narrative is fiction based on fact-- a form he developed so deftly in his companion volume The Year of the Whale, for which he was awarded the John Burroughs Medal in 1974 for the best book in the field of natural history. The new work is enhanced with illustrations by Pulitzer Art Prize winner Leonard Everett Fisher.' A quote from the book: 'The Golden Seal climbs slowly to a slanting table of rock. She rises for a long moment on the heels of her hands, a statue carved by a creator patient beyond infinity. Her eyes are fixed on the far, empty sea; they smolder darkly and reflect in crescents the blue curve of the sky. She seems lost in reverie. Perhaps for an instant in her rude, reflexive life, in some small and quiet corner of her brain, memories have collected to generate a rational thought. Then a breeze lighter than half a feather touches her face. The spark dies. Her whiskers twitch; she breathes deeply; she turns her fine, pointed nose about; she takes up again the task of survival. At the point of questioning the quality of life she returns to its economics.'. Inscribed by Illustrator(s).
