Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. Willy Pogany (illustrator). This book has grey/olive boards with brown writing and illustrations on the front board and the spine. It is in a very good condition with very minimal shelf ware and bumping. A few of the pages inside the front and back boards, do have some age spotting, which disappears after that. There are 16 coloured tipped in plates, one has a small crease on the edge, the others are in a very good condition. Some of the pages are uncut and are unpaginated. There is a penned inscription inside on the front end paper and a sticker which says'Ex Libris Dolores Govan'. There is an age spot on the outside of the pages on the bottom section. OVerall it is in a very good condition, without the jacket. I cannot find a date the book was published, but it does look like an old verysion.

This copy is in fine condition bound in green cloth covered boards with brown titling to the spine and decoration by the artist to the upper board. This copy is bright, tight, white and square, there is some typical spotting to the f.e.p. The unclipped dust wrapper has some very light edge wear but is still in near fine condition. This copy is undated but is in first edition state. Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám is the title that Edward FitzGerald gave to his 1859 translation from Persian to English of a selection of quatrains (rub??iy?t) attributed to Omar Khayyam (1048-1131), dubbed "the Astronomer-Poet of Persia". Although commercially unsuccessful at first, FitzGerald's work was popularised from 1861 onward by Whitley Stokes, and the work came to be greatly admired by the Pre-Raphaelites in England. FitzGerald had a third edition printed in 1872, which increased interest in the work in the United States. By the 1880s, the book was extremely popular throughout the English-speaking world, to the extent that numerous "Omar Khayyam clubs" were formed and there was a "fin de siècle cult of the Rubaiyat". This edition has the considerable advantage of fifteen full colour reproductions of watercolours by Willy Pogany tipped in. Ref JJJ 5.

This book is described as the fourth rendering in English verse by Edward FitzGerald (1809-1883) who was a writer and poet. Beginning in 1859, FitzGerald authorized four editions (1859, 1868, 1872 and 1879) and there was a fifth posthumous edition (1889) of his translation of the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám. FitzGerald's translation of the Rubáiyát is notable for being a work to which allusions are both frequent and ubiquitous. It remains popular, but enjoyed its greatest popularity for a century following its publication, wherein it formed part of the wider English literary canon. This edition has the benefit of eight tipped in colour plates and twenty one monochrome illustrations by Willy Pogany Ref UUU 3.
