The text of the Satires is given in Latin, and includes, in English, a Preface, Brewster's translation of Persius, Dr. Johnson's London (or Imitation of the Th…ird Satire of Juvenal) and his Vanity of Human Wishes (or Imitation of the Tenth Satire of Juvenal), and Smith's tables of Roman money. The book is bound in contemporary half leather over marbled paper covered boards and gold titling and designs on the spine. The case of the book is in good to very good condition with expected shelf wear and soiling to the boards and a dent near the middle of the fore edge of the front board. The corners are bumped with some damage and a little loss to the leather around the corner tips. The leather is missing from the top 1 3/4" of the spine.The contents are tight and clean apart from some scattered small marks and light foxing to pages 65 to 98 and a few other pages. The last page is browned in places with some foxing and the title-page is lightly soiled with a little faint foxing. A name and date (1840) has been written on the front free endpaper and a name and date (1884) written in red ink on the front fixed endpaper.

Cramer-Klett am Innendeckel, insges. gut. Sprache: Latein, Titelkupfer. ------- Decimus Iunius Iuvenalis (deutsch Iuvenal oder Juvenal) war ein römischer Sati…rendichter des 1. und 2. Jahrhunderts. Seine genauen Lebensdaten sind nicht bekannt. Er stammte wahrscheinlich aus Aquinum. Man vermutet ein Geburtsjahr um 60 (58?) und ein Todesjahr einige Jahre nach 127 (138?). Nicht gesichert ist etwa die Nachricht, Juvenal sei verbannt worden, nachdem er Spottverse gegen einen von Domitian protegierten Tänzer veröffentlicht habe. Von Juvenal sind 16 Satiren (saturae) zu verschiedenen Themen überliefert, die einen Einblick in das Alltagsleben der Römer zur Zeit Domitians bieten.

Brown leather with gold borders. Raised cords, spine label maroon with gold lettering. An early binding but I doubt it's the origin…al binding. Marbled endpapers. Foreedges marbled. Name signed on blank side of marbled endpaper dated 1876. Book measures 9 x 12 inches. Wonderful wide margins and large type, distinctive traits of Baskerville's best work. Text in Latin. Some light foxing towards the end, but nowhere very aggressive. It seems that Baskerville may have used a different paper for the final 25 pages, as I have seen 2 other copies of this book with foxing beginning in the exact same place, after page 215. Binding tight and attractive with slight wear to the hinges. A very fine copy of a imprint that is instantly recognizably Baskerville's work.

In full dark brown polished calf bordered in blind, five raised bands on spine. Two ownership names in ink; an inked circle in the middle of the title page…. Withal, a solid, presentable copy. With the ownership names of Thomas Lear Strode (1787-1817) on the front free endpaper, he of Devon lineage that used Newnham Park as their family seat, and Henry William Soltau ("H. W. Soltau 1822") 1805-1875) on the title page; he was a published biblical scholar of some renown.The tight, rhetorical vitriol and invective of Juvenal's dactylic hexameter is presented here in a charming pocket edition a la Elzevir.
