This is a mint-condition copy of The Jungle, the 1906 novel by the American journalist Upton Sinclair (1878-1968). Sinclair worked under cover in Chicago's Union Stock Yards with the goal of exposing corruption in the meat-packing industry and the plight of the working poor. The book caused a sensation by exposing unsanitary practices; the result was legislation such as the Meat Inspection Act. This is a Heritage Press copy, printed in 1965. It is a beautiful book--beige cloth boards, best-quality paper and lots of illustrations by the American artist (Fletcher Martin 1904-1979). 7" x 11" and 334 pages. It comes in a hard slipcase which is discolored from sun exposure. The book's original owner (a Canadian diplomat) signed the front endpaper. Other than that, there's not a mark in it or on it. It's in perfect condition.

Cloth, 8vo, 23 cm, xx, 616 pp. From the preface: "Merton College possesses a varied and rich series of internal accounts which begin with the foundation of the college in the late thirteenth century. In 1980 the editors began to transcribe the surviving Tudor domestic accounts of the college. At a very late stage in this work two large bundles of accounts were found in the college sacristy. These were undated and unidentified except for various notes left by earlier college archivists puzzled by the character of this material. These documents proved to be some of the earliest accounts surviving in Europe kept by stewards of hall. The work of identifying, dating and integrating these documents considerably delayed the preparation of this first volume. We have chosen to present here the internal accounts from the beginning of the wardenship of Richard Fitzjames, who by his institution of the college Registrum Annalium, his introduction of a closer check on financial affairs, his personal status in the church, country and university and his benevolence to the college confirmed Merton as one of the leading academic colleges in Oxford and therefore in Europe."
