Hardcover. Zustand: new. Jacques, Robin (illustrator). Hardcover. Recipient of the prestigious Commonwealth Writers Prize in 1989, Janet Frame has long been admired for her startlingly original prose and formidable imagination. A native of New Zealand, she is the author of eleven novels, four collections of stories, a volume of poetry, a children's book, and her heartfelt and courageous autobiography — all published by George Braziller. This fall, we celebrate our thirty-ninth year of publishing Frame's extraordinary writing. 'One upon a time, not long ago, almost now, there was a young House ant called Mona Minim who was preparing to make her first journey out of the nest.' So begins this enchanting story of little Mona Minim in her yellow sunbonnet and floral apron and six black-buttoned shoes, who became lost while playing the Stair Game and was found by Barbara, the Garden Ant, who became her friend. In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. All too often British history means English history and the histories of Wales, Scotland and Ireland are left to scholars of the 'Celtic Fringe'. In this clear and authoritative introduction to the medieval history of the British Isles, the four countries are viewed together, revealing the similarities and contrasts between the different regions. During the period 1100-1400 the British Isles formed a political sphere of great complexity, and were closely integrated with continental Europe. The most dynamic power was that represented by the Anglo-Norman aristocracy, church and monarchy, and their successor, the Plantagenet state. Robin Frame traces the expansion of this power, which by 1300 had embraced the whole of Wales and much of Ireland. He examines how the Scottish kings alone sustained and extended rival orbit, and how the prolonged clash between the two monarchies eventually loosened the control of each other over its Gaelic fringes. For this Clarendon Paperback edition, Professor Frame has added a new bibliographical essay, surveying recent work in what is becoming a thriving area of study. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
