Original paper wraps have been bound in. Limited edition of 1,500 copies of which this is number 50. Numbered and initialed by the publisher on the limitation page. This is one of 70 copies on Japan paper, with three states of each engraving. In this case, the first set is the book itself with text printed on the pages as well. All the illustrations and initials and hand colored. The second set of plates is at the end, and does not include the text or the hand coloring. Finally, the third set of plates is hand colored, but with no text. 34 pages. Book measures approximately 5 x 7 inches. Top edge gilt. Etched bookplate tipped to free endpaper with the name Pierre van de Weghe. The two sets of engravings at the end are water damaged, and the marbled paper is missing from the back cover. The text pages are somewhat buckled from water as well, but still quite beautiful. Front hinge a little loose. Elegant half-havana morocco binding with bands, smooth spine with author, title, and date stamped in gold, cold-stamped fillet along the leather edges on the covers, original endpapers preserved, gilt head. Spine slightly sun-faded, binding otherwise very fresh, pages in perfect condition. Illustrated edition featuring compositions by Gustave Adolphe Mossa, in color within the text, including 4 full-page illustrations. Published in 1885, Le Petit soldat de plomb follows in the vein of tales and stories inspired by tradition, here freely reinterpreted with a wholly personal elegance.
