Hardcover. Zustand: Good. New Edition. 8vo; [ix], 310 pages, fore-edge untrimmed, t.e.g., red cloth, front hinge repaired This, France's first successful novel, won the Academie Francaise prize, It describes literary life in Paris in the 19th century. But what was Bonnard's crime? Anatole France later was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize in Literature. "In 19th-century Paris, a retiring philologist and bibliophile finds the daughter of a long ago love and resolves to provide for her. He discovers she is being mistreated by her guardian and abducts her for her own safety. When she marries, he sells his library to pay her dowry, and retires to the country." Edward Herriot called Anatole France the "True spiritual son of Voltaire and Renan." This is a volume in THE WORKS OF ANATOLE FRANCE, edited by Frederick Chapman.
