Selected tales of world-wide miniature railroad lines. 270 pages, 14 area maps and 9 equipment drawings by the author -- approximately 225 unusually fine photographs. Frederick Shaw has achieved an entirely new approach to the subject of railroading. He presents these tiny railway lines with explanations for their being and fine descriptions of their locale. The author has such affection for the little railways and such great esteem for their builders, that he has included, of course, passages of tribute to the pioneers of this field. The reader with nostalgic leanings will appreciate his chapter about the Cagney brothers. Many of the early Cagney engines are in use today in amusement parks throughout the country. This also offers generous tidbits of information for model fanciers, along with fine equipment drawings. In "Workshop for Rail Fans" it is shown how a railroad fiend can methodically become more so by "taking the course". Primarily, the book shows that the little railways, though of endearing size, have the same struggle for existence as did their larger prototypes.

This medium-sized hard cover book (6 ¾ x 9 ¾ inches, 261 pages) was published by Howell-North of Berkeley, California, dated 1958, the Second Printing of the First Edition (as stated). The book is bound in salmon colored cloth boards with black titles on cover and spine; it is protected by a colorful pictorial dust jacket. The illustrations include 14 area maps, 9 equipment drawings by the Author and approximately 225 b&w photographs. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The dust jacket shows some minor edge wear and rubbing to the colored finish. The hard covers are clean, bright and unbumped. Inside, the book is unmarked and the pages, plates and photos are clean and bright throughout. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight, sound and square.
