Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. Third. 2 volumes, bound in one (printed 1647 - 1648). Folio. Early leather boards, rebacked with renewed leather spine. Some wear to cover extremities, but a solid binding and cover. Marbled end sheets. Scattered spotting, (generally light) staining. Collation: [16], 286, [28] p. The second work (which is a 2nd ed.): [8], 189, 200-394, 435-510 p. Both titles have additional illustrated title pages engraved by William Marshall. Numerous portraits in the second work and printers' devices throughout. The first title lacks the map. Refs: Wing F2438 & F2444. ESTC R226090 & R6571. The first work is Fuller's early modern history of the Crusades. In it he discusses the causes, ramifications, and potential justification of the Holy War. Fuller was critical of the Papal motives and results of endeavor. The second work is a utopian discourse on what constitutes the best state. It describes the holy state as existing in the family and in public life, gives rules of conduct, model "characters" for the various professions and profane biographies. He outlines the characteristics of "the good husband", "the good servant", and "the good widow", and (perhaps more interestingly) biographies of profane people. It was the most popular of Fuller's writings.
