To be in the safety, comfort and freedom of an Of?icers' or Sergeants' Mess in Britain and within a few hours to be locked in a cell in hostile territory, a prisoner of war? The airman's courage had already been pushed close to any man's limit by the unequal battle he had lost in the sky. Now it was to be tested again, face to face with his enemy and for a length of time that often seemed unending. Airmen prisoners were the most closely guarded of all war prisoners, never less than one armed guard to every four prisoners. Airmen prisoners were shot, beaten, starved, held for long periods in solitary con?nement, marched through blizzards for weeks, held as hostages and many coldly mur- dered. To ?y as aircrew against a deter- mined and powerful enemy was certain- ly 'not all glory' as these true stories will show, but there were deeds of glor- ious, matchless courage. Throughout the prisoners' ordeal there was leader- ship, comradeship and humour which shone like an unquenchable beacon in their dark world. The author's Wellington bomber was shot down by a Messerschmitt night?ghter when sent to attack a synthetic-oil plant. He spent nearly ?ve years in Germany and occupied Europe, learning from ?rst-hand the n'gours of the life of a prisoner of war. Many of those whose contribution is acknowledged are personal friends. The Royal Air Force ex-PoW Associ- ation has one of the most loyal mem- bership lists. It is satisfying to note that personnel who have endured incarcera- tion and captivity in the con?icts since 1945 are now members of the group, thus guaranteeing its survival.
