The author's Wellington bomber was shot down by a Messerschmitt nightfighter when sent to attack a synthetic-oil plant. he spent nearly five years in German and occupied Europe, learning from first-hand the rigours of the life of a prisoner of war. Many of those whose contribution is acknowledged are personal friends.
