During 1861 and 1862, the regiment served in the Indian Territory, Arkansas, and Missouri. For the remainder of the war, the unit was attached to the Army of Tennessee fighting east of the Mississippi. Garrett's letters were written to his sweetheart, Elizabeth Gibbard, and William Gibbard, his future father-in-law.
