Very minimal wear at the bottom edge. Bret Harte (1836-1902) was an American poet and short story writer best-known for depictions of people from the California Gold Rush. He was also the first editor of the Overland Monthly, a magazine published in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This pamphlet contains a biography of Harte by George Wharton James (1858-1923) and reprints of a few of his works, including his well-known poem, "Plain Language from Truthful James" ("The Heathen Chinee"). Harte had frequently defended Chinese immigrants and intended this poem to be satirical and a way to combat anti-Chinese sentiment at the time, but unfortunately, the poem had the opposite effect and reinforced negative stereotypes of the Chinese. Toward the back of the pamphlet is an article by A. J. Cloud about John Sutter, Sutter's Fort, and early other aspects of early California history.

This book examines the impact of forage harvesting systems, date of harvest, weather patterns, grain feeding methods, and herd size on farm income. Using 52 weather patterns and 3 starting harvest dates, the author develops a simulation model comprising 5 computer programs written in FORTRAN with FORMAT for a 1620 IBM digital computer to evaluate 6 different hay harvesting systems and 3 different grain feeding practices. The model can be used to simulate harvesting forage, feeding cows, buying and selling forage, and output of milk, as well as calculate total income, total cost, net income, and total investment. This book provides farmers and agricultural professionals valuable insights into how different forage harvesting systems and grain feeding practices can impact farm income, helping them make informed decisions to optimize their operations.
