In den WarenkorbExtrait. Zustand: Gut. 22 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author to Meyer Reinhold. - Binding slightly bumped, author's name written on the cover, otherwise good and very clean. - From the text: Educated Frenchmen of the first third of the sixteenth century recognized that Hellenism had taken root in French soil within their own lifetime. Rabelais, in 1532, represents Gargantua as celebrating the event in a letter to his son Pantagruel, « Maintenant, toutes disciplines sont restitués, les langues instaurées : grecque, sans laquelle c'est honte que une personne se die sçavant ». The reality that Rabelais was celebrating comprised such manifestations as the printing of the first Greek book in Paris in 1507, Aleandro's arrival there in the next year, Lascaris' mission to Venice in 1520 under the sponsorship of François I to recruit students for the king's intended but abortive Collège de jeunes grecs and to acquire Greek manuscripts, Budé's Comentarii Linguae Graecae (1529) and above all the appointment by François I in 1530 of the first two lecteurs royaux for Greek to the Collège Royal. Lefranc in his Histoire du Collège de France 1893) has singled out a particularly piquant scene, « N'est-ce pas un moment unique dans l'histoire, que celui où ces trois apôtres, Calvin, Loyola, Rabelais. ont pu se presser côte à côte au pied de la même chaire? » (p. 134). Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. Very light bumping to bottom corners of book and top of spine. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; 276 pages; The first three chapters of this book elucidate the scholastic goals of both classical cultures during the Roman Imperial period. Apuleius' works share the stage in these chapters with representatives of the second-century Greek cultural paradigm. They define patterns of discourse and fit selected examples of analogous Apuleian strategies into the broader cultural framework. Subsequent chapters focus closely on the complete Apuleian corpus under the general headings of Apuleius in the roles of orator, philosopher and novelist. Two of Apuleius' philosophical works and his novel the Golden Ass provide an unparalleled opportunity to analyze the methods of translation and adaptation employed by the major Latin writer of the second half of the second century.
