The theme of the 2009 ECLAS Conference is a particularly appropriate one for the first ECLAS Conference to be held in Italy - with its incomparable cultural heritage. The topic: "Landscape and Ruins - Planning and design for the regeneration of derelict places" is at first sight something which may not seem so relevant to those parts of Europe without landscapes that enjoy such a rich legacy of classical archaeological sites, but in fact all newly created landscapes are necessarily built on the remains of what went before, and the importance of understanding time depth in landscapes at all scales and of all types is being increasingly acknowledged. The main issues that have been identified within this theme are the regeneration of rejected landscapes, planning and design after catastrophic events and landscape change, planting design for ruined landscapes and development of archaeological landscapes. The papers on this theme reflect the multifaceted nature of the landscape and mankind's interaction with it. They show that the subject area is one of unusual breadth, drawing on and integrating concepts and approaches, not just from the two sides of the traditional divide between the creative arts and the natural sciences, but incorporating many aspects of the humanities and technology as well. Il tema della ECLAS Conferenza 2009 è particolarmente appropriato per essere la prima ECLAS conferenza che si tiene in Italia - con il suo incomparabile patrimonio culturale. Il tema: "Paesag-gio e Rovine - Pianificazione e progettazione per la rigenerazione dei luoghi abbandonati" è qual-cosa che a prima vista può non sembrare così rilevante per quelle parti d'Europa senza paesaggi che godono di un ricco patrimonio di classici siti archeologici, ma in realtà tutti i paesaggi di nuova costituzione sono necessariamente costruiti sui resti di quello che li precedevano, oltre al fatto che l'importanza di comprendere a fondo il tempo in paesaggi a tutti i livelli e di tutti i tipi viene sempre più riconosciuta. Le principali questioni che sono state individuate all'interno di questo tema sono la rigenerazione dei paesaggi, la pianificazione e progettazione di paesaggi a seguito di eventi catastrofici e dopo il cambiamento del paesaggio, l'impianto e progettazione per i paesaggi in rovina e lo sviluppo dei paesaggi archeologici. I documenti su questo tema riflettono la natura multiforme che è capace di assumere il paesaggio e l'interazione dell'uomo con esso. Cloth, paper label with engraving on front board, 8vo, 24 cm, 45 pp, ills, 1 folding facsimile, 1 map. A part-facsimile of, and commentary on, an interesting letter concerning Venice and the cotton trade, written in 1425 by a commercial agent to his principal. From the Summary of the letter: "Angelo Gabriel informs Laurenzio Dolfìn about the situation in Syria, where he has decided to stay for the winter with a view to await the outcome of the cotton harvest and to'get the best prices for raw cotton arid cotton yarn in Tripoli, Laodicea (presently Latakia) and Amman. On his arrival in Beirut from Venice on September 9th, he hired a cargo-vessel, together with Marco Capelo, to transport cloth arid other materials to Tripoli. After arriving there on September 13th, he hired another vessel, as he had bartered three bags of finished cotton for 'sennini' cotton* at a value of 800 ducats per bag and for cloth worth 700 ducats. However, he could not load the merchandise on that ship for lack of space. (The other ships were all sailing to Laodicea.) Only through the intervention of die Venetian official in Tripoli. Piero Manolo, was he able to arrange for the merchandise to be transported.As everybody is busy harvesting new cotton, there is riot enough cotton yam available on the market. Venetian merchants had bought medium quality cotton for 27-30 ducats per roll which induced Arab merchants to buy large quantities for 18-24 ducats per roll hoping to sell the merchandise to other Venetians, who were expected to arrive within a few days. According to Gabriel, only a slight delay in the arrival of these ships would ruin the Arab 'speculators'." ".
