Primera edicion. ¿Qué se entiende por "régimen feudal"? ¿Cuales fueron las condiciones de su abolición en los Estados de Occidente? ¿Fueron estas condiciones similares en estos Estados? Tales preguntas sirvieron de punto de partida para el coloquio celebrado en Toulouse en 1968. Jacques Godechot, al presentar las ponencias del coloquio, dice textualmente: "Todos los historiadores presentes en el coloquio coincidieron en calificar de régimen feudal un tipo de régimen que se caracterizaba por una forma particular de propiedad, con frecuencia por la servidumbre y siempre por el pago de los llamados censos feudales y señoriales. El coloquio mostró las similitudes y las diferencias entre el régimen feudal en Francia y el que existía en la misma época en todos los países del mundo occidental, América y Rusia incluidas. Las diferencias, a veces muy importantes, explican, en parte, los caracteres que revistieron en estos diferentes Estados los movimientos revolucionarios. Casi en todas partes, en efecto, el régimen feudal fue abatido por la revolución: de 1770 a 1789 por la revolución americana; de 1789 a 1815 por las revoluciones que se desarrollaron en Francia, en la mayor parte de Europa y en América Latina; de 1848 a 1851 por las revoluciones que se reavivaron en Europa y completaron la obra realizada por la Revolución francesa y el régimen imperial que, en el terreno de la abolición del régimen feudal, fue su heredero. Hubo muy pocos países donde el régimen feudal fue destruido por simple decisión gubernamental, siendo los dos casos más típicos en este aspecto Rusia y Canadá. Las modalidades de abolición del régimen feudal se prestan a reflexión. Caracterizan bien los designios de la clase dirigente y es esencial conocerlos para comprender las estructuras sociales actuales del mundo occidental." .
