Engineer of the School of Physics and Chemistry, Doctor of Science, he worked at the Curie Laboratory from 1934 to 1940. During the Second World War he was a member of the Free French Forces, and he participated in atomic research, in particular in connection with plutonium. In the U.S.A. in 1942, and in Canada from 1943 to 1946. One of the directors of the Commissariat of Atomic Energy since it foundation, he had been responsible for chemistry starting in 1959 and became its Director of External Relations and Programs. He was also a professor at the Institute of Political Studies and a French representative at the International Agency of Atomic Energy. This is a complete and for the time an up-to-date international history of atomic energy, covering the political, military, scientific, industrial and economic aspects. The book begins with a description of the forty years of research which led to the discovery of fission. It tells of the making of the first bomb with its accompanying political problems, describes the post-war years with their policy of atomic secrecy and the race towards the H-bomb. It then shows how the lifting of the veil of secrecy brought about years of over-optimism in national and international undertakings, followed by a period of reasonable adjustment. The problems of atomic armament and disarmament are discussed. The book ends with a description of the then present state of development of atomic energy and of its prospects.
