The engravings to this work are all by Johann Sebastian Muller and Charles Grignion after drawings by Richard Bentley. In a full calf binding. Rebound with original backstrip and boards preserved. Externally, generally smart. Patches of rubbing to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Marks to the boards. Small amount of loss to the backstrip due to rubbing. Bumping to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Occasional light spots. Prior owner's notes to the margins of page 54. Small repair to the tail of the first leaf. In quarter-calf binding with gilt detailing and paper-covered boards. Externally smart, there is some wear to the backstrip and extremities. Handsomely bound in contemporary morocco-gilt by Clarke & Bedford.Thomas Gray was "a gentleman of his age, who numbered among his private accomplishments the occasional composition of poetry, who wished to share with others only those poems which met his own standards of excellence, and who, except for the two Pindaric odes, was reluctant to see any of them appear in print. Among these was one, perhaps the richest in self-revelationÉ a poem which through many changes of taste has retained its popularity and defined the literary rank of its author. Gray's Elegy is one of the great poems of the English language; to many readers, learned and otherwise, it has stood almost for the idea of poetry itself" (ODNB).
