Der dunkle öffentliche Raum intimer Selbstbezüglichkeit ist der Ort, an dem die Zuschauer, jeder für sich und doch gemeinsam im Raum, ihren Gefühlen freien Lauf lassen können. Indem das Kino ein Ort der Projektion im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes eine ganz eigene Welt erschafft, in der die Realität außen vor bleibt, vermittelt sich dem Zuschauer das Gefühl, ganz bei sich zu sein und sich den eigenen Empfindungen ungeniert und genussvoll bis hin zur Tränenseligkeit hingeben zu können. Das Kinomelodram setzt fort, was die Kultur der Empfindsamkeit in den Briefromanen des 18. Jahrhunderts propagiert hatte. Wie kein anderes Filmgenre beherrscht das Melodram die Klaviatur der Gefühle. Dennoch geht es in den hier versammelten kulturwissenschaftlichen, filmwissenschaftlichen und filmkritischen Reflexionen zum Ergriffen-Sein im Kino nicht um eine aktuelle Genrebestimmung des Melodramas. Im Melodram steht ein für das Kino insgesamt gültiger Modus ästhetischer Erfahrung zur Diskussion, in dem Emotionen aufgedeckt, anerkannt und differenziert werden können und damit zur Ausbildung einer Kultur der Gefühle beitragen.
