Dysthes Karriere begann glamouros: 1953 wurde der Student des Royal College of Art in London mit der Herstellung der Kronungsgabe der Schule, einer Holzschatulle, fur Konigin Elizabeth II. beauftragt. Seither ist er aus der internationalen Designszene nicht mehr wegzudenken. Seine Stuhl- und Mobelentwurfe 1001, Popcorn, Prisma, Planet und Laminette sind Exportschlager. Letzterer zahlt durch seinen Einsatz in zahlreichen offentlichen Gebauden zu Norwegens popularsten Stuhlen, auf dem zumindest jeder Norweger schon einmal virtuell Platz genommen hat; auf seinem Stuhl Gardist alle uber den Osloer Flughafen Gardermoen Reisenden. Sven Ivar Dysthe hat daruber hinaus mit der Entwicklung einer revolutionaren Ski-Bindung aus Kunststoff wesentlich zur Entwicklung der Skiausstattung in den 1970ern - und den damaligen Erfolgen norwegischer Sportler - beigetragen.
