Gli scritti teorici in questo campo non riescono a comunicare la vivacità, la drammaticità e l'interazione delle personalità coinvolte. In questo libro Jay Haley e Lynn Hoffman consentono di gettare uno sguardo sui problemi della pratica clinica. Nella convinzione che la miglior descrizione della terapia della famiglia consista semplicemente nel riferire ciò che fanno coloro che la praticano, cercando peraltro di abbracciare una vasta sfera di stili terapeutici, gli autori hanno intervistato cinque esperti terapeuti di diversi indirizzi chiedendo a ciascuno di essi di spiegare ed esporre per esteso le proprie tecniche sulla base di un colloquio iniziale da essi realmente condotto con famiglie in terapia. I cinque lunghi capitoli di questo libro sono costituiti dalla registrazione di queste conversazioni, cui fa da contrappunto la trascrizione letterale di ciascuna seduta terapeutica vera e propria. In tal modo il lettore non solo può osservare il terapeuta al lavoro, ma può anche partecipare alle sue successive riflessioni nel corso del colloquio, alle ragioni della sua strategia e allo svilupparsi dell'incontro tra terapeuta e famiglia, con tutte le sue incertezze e improvvisazioni.
