Gabriel è il più piccolo di quattro fratelli. È affetto da una forma di "autismo atipico" (ADHD). Il bambino sembra in tutto e per tutto normale, ma ha un comportamento a prima vista "solo" divertente. La malattia lo rende incapace di affrontare le novità, l'imprevisto, ciò che non rientra nella routine e nelle regole e che lo spinge a prendere tutto quel che si dice alla lettera (per esempio alla domanda "Ti sei tagliato i capelli?" risponde "No, sono andato dal barbiere"). Ovviamente, in questa situazione, le difficoltà per il padre non sono poche, ed è proprio per far fronte al complicato compito cui è chiamato che il genitore inizia a scrivere questa lunga lettera a Gabriel, raccontando tutti gli aneddoti che gli vengono in mente, spesso buffi, certe volte drammatici e commoventi, per cercare di fare ordine in questa loro bizzarra esperienza.
