  • Four volume set comprised of Harper imprints for 1842 (Vol. 3) and 1844 (Vols. I, II, IV). Full title - THE WORKS OF THE REV. ROBERT HALL, A.M. WITH A MEMOIR OF HIS LIFE, BY DR. GREGORY; REMINISCENCES, BY JOHN GREENE, ESQ.; AND HIS CHARACTER AS A PREACHER, BY THE REV. JOHN FOSTER. PUBLISHED UNDER THE SUPERINTENDENCE OF OLINTHUS GREGORY, LL.D., F.R.A.S. PROFESSOR OF MATHEMATICS IN THE ROYAL MILITARY ACADEMY; AND JOSEPH BELCHER, D.D. IN FOUR VOLUMES. VOL. I. VOL. II. VOL. III. and VOL. IV. All hardcover: H 23.25cm x L 15.5cm, uniformly bound in full calf leather; rubbing and some patches of surface abrasion/peeling to boards; surface furrows (aka alligatoring) to darkened spine leather (likely set was once a bit close to a fire) with past owner's age-darkened antiquarian personal library labels affixed near each spine heel; spines decorated gilt lettered dark red title labels and black Vol.# labels with some flaking to horizontal gilt bars; losses to slender gilt tooling along board edges. All four volumes have matching marbling to all three text block edges; Varied foxing, toning, and some staining to interior leaves. Bindings are firm. ***VOLUME I (1844) paged as [title leaf], xi-xvi, 17-504; antiquarian ink signature "S.B. Mathews" on front free endpaper with his ink name stamp thrice on front pastedown and twice on ffep verso. ***VOLUME II (1844) i-xii, 13-488 pages; front pastedown has antiquarian ink signature "S.B. Mathews" plus his ink name stamp twice on front pastedown ***VOLUME III (1842) per 1842 Harper imprint (and somewhat different title) issued as the concluding volume in a three volume set so probably some text discordance with preceding and successive volumes; xvi, 546,[4] pages; antiquarian ink signature "S.B. Mathews" on front pastedown with his ink name stamp twice on rear flyleaf recto and thrice on rear pastedown. ***VOLUME IV (1844) i-x, 11-686 pages; front free endpaper and adjoining two front flyleaves removed with their remnant stubs at lower gutter; first leaf present is frontispiece with edge-worn folded fore-edge margin; antiquarian ink signature "S.B. Mathews" on front pastedown with pencil signature "Chas. L. Mathews" and pencil doodle on rear pastedown. As for genealogical sleuthing regarding the two Mathews, the set was acquired from a Birmingham, Alabama estate but from a family whose eighteenth to mid-twentieth century roots, as evidenced by inscriptions and the like among other books in the large collection, were in New England and, in particular, within Maine. Please note that this set has an approximate shipping weight of 8.25 pounds (3.74 kg) and will require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail.
