Documents range from texts and commentaries on…the Bible and Talmud to philosophy, kabbalah, liturgy, secular poetry and personal letters. Prefatory note provided by author discusses the 19th century discovery of this material and places it within the context of medieval Jewish life. The fragments are from various Genizot, mostly that of the Old Cairo Synagogue, collected and purchased by Dr. Cyrus Adler, Mayer Sulzberger, Prof. David Werner Amram, Dr. Herbert Friedenwald, Prof. Camden M. Cobern, and Ephraim Lederer, and stored in the libraries of Dropsie College, University of Pennsylvania and the Young Men's Hebrew Association (Y.M.H.A.).
