This book is a 1915 historical compilation of temperance and prohibition speeches edited by former Indiana Governor J. Frank Hanly and Oliver Wayne Stewart and the story of a great campaign. The book documents a massive, nation-wide tour organized by the Flying Squadron of America, a temperance organization that traveled to cities across the United States between September 30, 1914, and June 6, 1915, to galvanize public and political support for national prohibition. 1500 meetings; 3500 addresses; 1,500,000 people; 65000 miles; Rich in incident; Alive in human interest; A powerful plea for the abolition of the liquor traffic. The "Flying Squadron" was divided into three distinct groups of revivalist-style speakers who rotated through targeted cities. The speeches relied heavily on progressive-era arguments, utilizing "scientific inquiries," patriotism, and religious appeals to argue that alcohol was ruining American society, industry, and families. They were called the "Flying Squadron" because the term historically refers to a highly mobile, rapid-response military or naval unit trained to move swiftly from one location to another. In the context of their 1914-1915 campaign, the group adopted this military metaphor to describe their fast-paced, aggressive blitz across the United States to fight the liquor traffic. Sepia toned portraits of 15 speakers are in place. A clean presentable copy.…

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition. Original publisher's brown paper-covered boards backed with dark yellow cloth. Gilt lettering on front cover. No lettering on spine. 5" x 7 1/2." Thirty-five pages, complete. One black-and-white frontispiece of the Indiana Monument, complete. Pages are virtually pristine and intact except for small occasional spots of foxing or discoloration, offsetting from frontispiece on a tissue guard, and light age toning. Covers are very clean and intact overall except for a few small stains on front and back, darkening on spine and cloth-covered part of binding, light rubbing, and slight wear to extremities. A Very Good copy. This book contains the printed text of an address that was given on the occasion of the unveiling and dedication of the Indiana Monument built in 1908 to honor the 702 Indiana Union prisoners-of-war (POWs) who died at Andersonville Prison (Camp Sumter) during the American Civil War. The address was originally given by Indiana Governor James Frank Hanly (1863-1920) on December 26, 1908. In his speech, Hanly honors the Indiana soldiers who died at Andersonville and all Civil War veterans and those who lost their lives during the war. Hanly pays special tribute to Andersonville POWs because they endured such tortuous and depraved circumstances within the camp and had no means of escaping. Hanly offers words of solace and consolation. Among them is his acknowledgment that the sacrifices of Union soldiers (including those at Andersonville) were not made in vain because the Union and peacetime were restored, slavery was ended, and freedom claimed victory. Andersonville Prison was established in February 1864 by the Confederate government as a POW camp. Over the 14-month span of Andersonville Prison's existence, about 45,000 Union prisoners-of-war were held captive there and about 13,000 of them died. In the infamous summer of 1864, it is estimated that 100 Union POWs died every day from disease, exposure, or malnutrition. The camp was beset by overcrowding, inadequate shelter, and a lack of sanitation, potable water, food, and medical supplies. Andersonville Prison was shut down by the Union after the Confederacy's defeat in April 1865. Published by Jennings and Graham in Cincinnati and Eaton and Mains in New York. …
