Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. Don Pollard (Author photograph) (illustrator). x, [2], 623, [5] pages. Illustrations. Includes Introduction; Part One, The Promise of Something Better; and Part Two, The Momentous Issue of Civil War. Also includes What Became of.?; Acknowledgments, Notes, and Index. A chronicle of the four months between Lincoln's election and inauguration evaluates the period decisions he made regarding slavery, secession, and the possibility of a Civil War, in an account that also offers insight into the selections of his cabinet members. Abraham Lincoln first demonstrated his determination and leadership in the Great Secession Winter--the months between his election in November 1860 and his inauguration in March 1861--when he rejected compromises urged on him by Republicans and Democrats, Northerners and Southerners, that might have preserved the Union a little longer, but would have enshrined slavery for generations. Though Lincoln has been criticized by many historians for failing to appreciate the severity of the secession crisis that greeted his victory, Holzer shows that the president-elect waged a shrewd and complex campaign to prevent the expansion of slavery while trying to limit secession to a few Deep South states. Through limited, brilliantly timed and crafted public statements, determined private letters, tough political pressure, and personal persuasion, Lincoln guaranteed the integrity of the American political process of majority rule, sounded the death knell of slavery, and transformed not only his own image but that of the presidency, even while making inevitable the war that would be necessary to make these achievements permanent. Derived from a Kirkus review: Award-winning Lincoln scholar Holzer meticulously examines the ominous period between the 16th president's election and his swearing in. In 1860 a constitutional provision prevented Lincoln from taking the presidential oath until March, some four months after he won the office. This dangerously long interregnum-which Henry Adams called "The Great Secession Winter"-unfortunately coincided with the single greatest crisis in the nation's history: the secession of southern states from the union. While the incumbent James Buchanan dithered, Lincoln, without legal authority, maneuvered behind the scenes to stiffen his own supporters, assiduously avoiding needless offense to the South. From borrowed capitol offices in his hometown of Springfield, Ill., he faced the delicate political task of assembling his cabinet; answered torrents of mail from and met with hundreds of critics, well-wishers and office-seekers; sat for artists and photographers and began growing his iconic beard; worked on the most important speech of his life, his inaugural address; and contacted hundreds of opinion-makers, party leaders and members of Congress, attempting to contain the crisis. With a month to go before inauguration, he delivered his touching farewell address to his neighbors and set off on a 13-day trip to Washington. Relying on recollections by Lincoln's contemporaries, newspaper and magazine accounts, Holzer turns in a learned chronicle of a massively significant few months. Effectively brings this tense interlude to vivid life. First Simon & Schuster Hardcover Edition [Stated]. First printing [stated].

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. Don Pollard (Author photograph) (illustrator). xxix, [3], 733, [3] pages. A Note on the Newspapers. Illustrations. Notes. Bibliography. Index. Harold Holzer (born February 5, 1949) is a scholar of Abraham Lincoln and the political culture of the American Civil War Era. He serves as director of Hunter College's Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute. Holzer previously spent twenty-three years as senior vice president for public affairs at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York before retiring in 2015. Holzer began his career as a newspaper reporter and then editor of The Manhattan Tribune. He then served as press secretary to Congresswoman Bella S. Abzug, press secretary to 1977 mayoral candidate Mario Cuomo, a government speechwriter for New York City Mayor Abraham D. Beame, and for six years as public affairs director for WNET. From 1984 through 1992 Holzer worked in the administration of Governor Mario Cuomo (with whom he co-edited the 1990 book, Lincoln on Democracy). In 1992, Holzer joined The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York as chief communications officer. He was elevated to vice president in 1996 and senior vice president for public affairs in 2005 with responsibilities over government affairs, multi-cultural development, admissions, and visitor services. In his work as a historian Holzer has authored, co-authored, and edited more than 52 books, and contributed more than 550 articles, plus chapters and forewords for 60 additional books. Many of his works have received awards, including the Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize and four other awards in 2015 for his book Lincoln and the Power of the Press. Winner of the Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize. Lincoln believed that "with public sentiment nothing can fail; without it, nothing can succeed." Harold Holzer makes a significant contribution to our understanding of Lincoln's leadership by showing us how deftly he managed his relations with the press of his day to move public opinion forward to preserve the Union and abolish slavery. --Doris Kearns Goodwin. From his earliest days, Lincoln devoured newspapers. As he started out in politics he wrote editorials and letters to argue his case. He spoke to the public directly through the press. He even bought a German-language newspaper to appeal to that growing electorate in his state. Lincoln alternately pampered, battled, and manipulated the three most powerful publishers of the day: Horace Greeley of the New York Tribune, James Gordon Bennett of the New York Herald, and Henry Raymond of the New York Times. When war broke out and the nation was tearing itself apart, Lincoln authorized the most widespread censorship in the nation's history, closing down papers that were disloyal and even jailing or exiling editors who opposed enlistment or sympathized with secession. The telegraph, the new invention that made instant reporting possible, was moved to the office of Secretary of War Stanton to deny it to unfriendly newsmen. Holzer shows us an activist Lincoln through journalists who covered him from his start through to the night of his assassination, when one reporter ran to the box where Lincoln was shot and emerged to write the story covered with blood. In a wholly original way, Holzer shows us politicized newspaper editors battling for power, and a masterly president using the press to speak directly to the people and shape the nation.
