Marietta, OH: At the Sign of Aladdin's Lamp, 1967. First edition (Burkholder and Myerson, A4775) Original printed green wrappers, illustrated, pp. vi, 42, one of 200 copies, only. In 1867 Marietta, Ohio hosted a series of lyceum-like lectures, including one by Ralph Waldo Emerson. This is a comprehensive history of that Emerson appearance and includes descriptions of some of the other speaking events, especially those by Frederick Douglas, John Godfrey Saxe, and Grace Greenwood. Marietta Register editor Rodney M. Stimson, in his mostly negative review of the Emerson talk, declared that ".the lecturer could begin in the middle, and work forward or backward.", which was something he must have been expecting based on earlier stories of Emerson as lecturer. But he added an appropriate and beautiful descriptive metaphor for this lack of organization: "Like orient pearls at random strung", taken from someone well known to Emerson, the 14th century Persian poet Hafiz. In Fine condition.
