The cliffhanger ending of Frank Herbert's Chapterhouse: Dune (1985) and his subsequent death in 1986 left some overarching plotlines unresolved. Hunters continues the story of the danger posed to humanity by a remote, unnamed, but ever-present "great enemy". The novel is based on notes left behind by Frank Herbert, but Hunters and its 2007 sequel Sandworms of Dune represent the authors' version of what Frank Herbert referred to as Dune 7, his own planned seventh novel in the Dune series. First editions.  The Legends of Dune trilogy is a series of full-length novels and short stories co-written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. They serve as a distant prequel trilogy to the Prelude to Dune series and revolve around the Butlerian Jihad--the war against the thinking machines. The Legends novels features the ancestors of major characters of the Original Dune series, specifically the Butler/Corrino family, Xavier Harkonnen and Vorian Atreides, and the Titans. In the Old Empire, humans had become complacent and reliant on machines to run their society. A small group of individuals took control of the Old Empire's computer systems and used the machines humanity had become dependent on to conquer them. Calling themselves "Titans," humanity's new rulers had their brains removed and placed in robotic bodies in order to prolong their lives and rule, therefore becoming cymeks. As time passed, the Titans associated themselves less with humanity and became more oppressive. Billions died under their rule. After several centuries, the Titan Xerxes became complacent and dependent on an artificial intelligence. After turning against Xerxes, the AI--calling itself Omnius--spread to the worlds of the other Titans and quickly defeated them. Because of its programming Omnius, was unable to harm the Titans. It instead incorporated them into its empire, the Synchronized Worlds. When the Titans had initially seized power, a group of humans formed the "League of Nobles" to resist them. The League of Nobles would continue its resistance against Omnius for over a thousand years before the events of the books. The universe at the time of Legends of Dune consists of essentially three groups of populated planets: League Worlds, Synchronized Worlds and Unallied Planets. As the series progresses, Leto becomes the new Atreides Duke, Shaddam becomes the emperor and aligns with the Bene Tleilax in their takeover of Ix to develop synthetic spice, and the Bene Gesserit punish Baron Vladimir Harkonnen for raping one of them with a disease that slows his metabolism. The Spacing Guild, having found the Tleilaxu synthetic spice to be fatal to its Navigators, forces Shaddam to capitulate to the Landsraad, with Leto playing a role in forcing Shaddam to sign humiliating peace accords, confirming his status as the emperor's leading rival.
