8vo (254x168 mm). 26 ff. Limp vellum binding with title calligraphed in red ink on the front cover. In clamshell box of red morocco, signed by Hugo Peller. Front cover with blindruled intersecting fillets and gilt dots on the left side and gilt lettering "Handschrift von Hermann Hesse" on the right side. Rear cover lined with parchmentpaper, lined with brown calfskin on the inside. As early as 1918, Hermann Hesse began illustrating his own poems with small watercolours and selling twelve of them at a time, with an additional cover sheet, for 200 (typewritten) or 250 Swiss francs (for handwritten copies). The proceeds went to the prisoners of war of the First World War, for whom Hesse organised book shipments from Bern. Later, he offered the Twelve Poems to patrons and collectors to help those persecuted by National Socialism during the Second World War or to support penniless artist friends. Hesse continued to create these collections of poems into old age, not just for sale, but also as gifts for friends. This manuscript contains the following poems written between 1904 and 1933: Morgen, Liebeslied, Blauer Schmetterling, Frühlingstag, Voll Blüten, Alterwerden, Vergänglichkeit, Rückgedenken, Abendgespräch, Traum von der Mutter; Bruder Tod, and Einsame Nacht (erroneously for Einsamer Abend). The accompanying watercolours depict mainly Ticino landscapes. The poem Liebeslied shows a flower vase, Traum von der Mutter a pen and ink drawing of a house and Einsame Nacht an interior with a lit candlestick on a table.A beautifull copy in a custom made morocco clam-shell box by the Swiss bookbinder Hugo Peller (1917-2003).

A total of 57½ pp. on 54 ff. 4to und (oblong) (large) 8vo. Includes 5 additional letters by Adele Hesse, Bruno Hesse and Ninon Hesse to the Gundert family. Extensive, substantial collection of letters (mostly autobiographical) to his closest relations, hitherto entirely unpublished. There are newer and younger friends, but no more old comrades and companions like him" (to Gertrud, letter dated 25 Aug. 1955). Furthermore, he recounts an amusing episode with a reader (no. 7, to Adele, February 1940), discussses other writers ("the poet Poe is one of the few great American poets of ther 19th century" (no. 27, to Gertrude, 1952) and even his own creative work (cf. his letters to Marulla, 1932, or no. 41, to Gertrud, postmarked 24 Feb. 1957). - A detailed list ist available upon request.

Small 4to. 7 bifolia of wove paper, of which 9 pages with text. With 14 beautiful, partly surreal original watercolours. Written in 1922 for his second wife Ruth Wenger, the fairy tale was published as a facsimile in 1954. Hesse himself wrote in his afterword to this edition: "Until today it was only available as a manuscript. I copied it many times in earlier years and painted little pictures for it, each time something different [.]". - According to Hesse's biographer Joseph Mileck, Hesse made over forty different copies, most of them written by hand, less often as a typescript. The present copy was prepared for the writer and editor Laurenz Wiedner (1903-1958), with whom Hesse was in correspondence in the 1940s and early 1950s. In 1947, Wiedner provided a page of it for an article in the "Wiener Bühne" (issue no. 7) on the occasion of Hesse's 70th birthday. - Outer margins partly somewhat browned, first 7 leaves with creasemarks in margin area at side, 2 leaves with backed marginal tear, cover somewhat soiled and sunned.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition of this allegorical work, drawing on Hesse's knowledge of Asian cultures, and a landmark in his appropriation of the East, an element of his work that would develop in significance up to the creation of his masterwork, "The Glass-Bead Game". Briefly inscribed by Hesse to the Heidelberg poet Alfred Mombert, ?Gruss für Alfred Mombert von H. Hesse vii. 41,? and rare thus. Mombert?s visionary works were highly regarded by the likes of Martin Buber, and would have certainly appealed to Hesse as well. At the Nazi ascendency he was relieved of his position at the Prussian Academy of the Arts, and he would die in 1942 as a result of illness sustained in the Gurs Internment Camp. Although Hesse signed and inscribed plenty of books, his better-known titles are genuinely scarce in presentation copies and rarely betray any particular merit as literary associations. Faint off-setting to end-papers, small stain to front cover, later ownership signature, else an excellent copy in a near fine dust jacket, a trifle worn at the head of the spine.
